Memento Mori, the message was something my mother shared with me for years after my birth. Latin for death is coming, but it meant so much more. While I lacked the understanding for its meaning at the time, there was always an undertone that told me the message behind this phrase. Death is coming, nothing lasts forever, in the end everything will eventually die. The world is always changing, always shifting, nothing will stay the same. Even while we remain behind others will die as an inevitable part of existence. Not everyone can be saved, no matter how hard we try to save them, and our chosen phrase to represent this is Memento Mori. Something which Unus and Annus (translated to one year) brought to us not too long ago.



But.

The message was never about the death or the dread that comes to us with the death of a loved one. It was about survival; it was about life and living the best we could. Savoring every second of our existence and living the best life we could possibly live. For some, that happiness was found in combat, for others, it was found in peace. Some of us-like my mother-found a happy middle in the chaos of everyday. Spending time with loved ones and treasuring the little things we had, even before they exploded into something bigger and better for the rest of us. My mother, she always fought so hard to make our world a better place... and yet, she also made an exceptional amount of time to spend together with us. As a family.

While others died around us this message of Memento Mori tasked us with using our time to the wisest and enjoying the time we still had. Time, it was always about time. Not for us, since mom made us immortal through the looping of our time streams while letting us continue to live out our lives as we see fit. But for the time left to those who were around us, for those my mother couldn't save even if she wanted to. For those outside the safety of the Kingdom, those who were not allied with us or in a positive standing with my mother, had no way of getting their time streams looped. And as a result, some if not all of them would eventually perish. But I had to learn to accept this as my mother had, for in their perishing resources would be maintained and the worlds would keep existing. It was a delicate balance I learned to call the circle of life.

For you see, every world has its own balance in this, and sometimes leaving others to die is the only way that some may live. So the balance can be maintained and renewed over and over again. This allows us to avoid total annihilation or a total collapse of the universe. It allows us to exist since food and water and other vital resources won’t run out. As such, paradoxically, life can be found in death and in death... life.

Still, despite this maintained balance it isn’t easy for all of us in the Kingdom, since vampires require willing participants to feed off by law in the Kingdom’s walls. Some in the Kingdom must eat after all, or risk going into a blood frenzy where we lose ourselves and forget how to recognize our friends from our foes. Father doesn’t trust me enough to feed off my mother, especially since it’s considered to be an intimate process for vampire kind. So, I’m left to my own devices. They look after me of course, and there’s always the infirmary with their donated blood bags.

But have you ever had blood from a blood bag? It’s disgusting, the plastic gets into it and fouls up the taste. So, just like my father, I’ve become a bit of a flirt around the Kingdom in order to get enough good blood to drink. Even if he stopped flirting with any who weren’t my mother long ago, he still maintained his vast charisma and charm, and he taught me his skills.

So, I’ve become a bit of a playgirl around here. Making my father proud yet overprotective in the process and my mother slightly concerned. But yes, I’m a playgirl. Not with any of mother’s mates, Oracle forbid, but I have suitors of my own which flock to my side and allow me to feed.

Nova feels different though, something in my heart tells me he’s special. Maybe this is like the love my father feels for my mother. Something which convinced him to stop being a playboy and finally settle down with a wife to call his own. Yes, for me, Nova is truly something special like the bond they share. The only question now is, do I dread his inevitable death, or do I risk the attachment which will bring him into the family and make him one of our own? If mother doesn’t approve of him, then his death will be ensured in the universe.

I don’t know what I was thinking back then, of course my mother would let Nova stay! She’s always been considerate about the passions of her children, and while she’s skeptical of the guy, she has approved of our relationship. Thinking back on it, she even looped Reno’s time stream for Cleo, and she absolutely hates Reno (We also call him Pinky, sometimes I wish I was here to see that hair color.) I guess I had nothing to worry about after all.

She really needs to stop telling us how we’re such a lovely couple though... It’s beginning to get embarrassing, and Nova won’t stop bringing it up. He seems proud of it, I guess, but just because I flirt with others doesn’t mean I enjoy the gloating of my boyfriend. He’s always talking about how he’s the favorite and how he’ll do anything to keep me happy. It’s endearing but.... I’m not used to being the one to blush. Nova’s really learned how to flip the tables on me....

My only concern now is, if mother has approved of Nova, what will happen now? She hasn’t looped his time stream yet and claims that we should wait and see if the relationship works out or not over the next few years. Personally, I don’t think it could ever fail. Nova and I, we love each other. Always have and always will. Just like my mother and father before me. Somehow, our love will find a way. But then again... Maybe there’s something my mother sees which we do not. I’ve only inherited father’s traits after all, as a vampire, which means I lack the clairvoyance of the Time Lords. Hopefully, my future with Nova is still guaranteed.
