Plague thrived on evolution, and so it was only fitting that, with time, evolution would lead to new and fantastic things. There is a garden in Rotrock Rim that echoes that sentiment. Hidden within a ravine, twisted, gnarled, and rotting flora swirled in dark and shadow. Feasting on the land through chemosynthesis they’re no longer held back by a lack of light. In numerous quantities, they produce bulbous fruits and massive roots, enough to feed a hidden clan and strong enough to drill through the rot. The caretaker of such a garden exists in seclusion. She knows the plants better than anyone else, and although her size is beyond the average for a Veilspun, she easily weaves her way below the garden through a passage cloaked in shadow. Below, the passage gapes open to a root-made cavern, carved and held steady by the root system, and here she cares for their every need. At the slightest change, the hint of wilt or a crinkle of a single leaf, she’s already concocting a remedy or scouting for the source of infection. She knows exactly what the plants need. If ever asked, she just smiles and says, “That’s a trade secret, my dear.” Don’t focus too hard on how her smile stretches a hint too far, how her veins branch out below her skin and her wings bloom like petals as they prepare for flight. How the leaves and roots seem to bend towards her as she reaches a claw out to them. How she never seems to sleep, eat, or drink. How her eyes remain devoid of any light at all. |
