Of particular interest in its gemstone form, chrysoberyl is one of the Ashfall Waste's biggest export materials. Large and consistent quantities of this mineral are created by the constant expansion of the Blacksand Annex.

Chanterelle has very little love for the garish light of the sun.
He's most at home in the underground labyrinths beneath Galehart. There, he can tend to his vast collection of mushrooms and fungi in peace.

If that were the end of the story, he'd be an average dragon, at best.
However, the truth stands that Chanterelle, when you get down to it, is not a dragon.

Due to working with fungi so closely, and not always being as careful as he should have been, Chanterelle has been permanently infected with a strain of dracocordyceps.

In short, he is a fungus infecting the body of a dragon.
This disturbing development is, as expected, a source of grief for Chanterelle's loved ones. Chanterelle is undeniably alive, as killing him would force the cordyceps to seek out a new host, but it's unknown how much of the nocturne is the original Chanterelle, and how much is the cordyceps.

Mushroom or not, Chanterelle's closest friend would have to be Mossclaw. Not only is he a generous client who makes regular purchases of Chanterelle's wares (even non-edible), he works with Chanterelle to manage his cordyceps, making his life easier. Junji and Leima are also dear friends, who don't mourn for Chanterelle, but take joy in being friends with the amalgamation that he is now.

Despite his condition, Chanterelle is nothing if not a skilled mycologist, and supplies the Cirocco dragons with an impressive variety of mushrooms for a variety of purposes. Truffles, shelf fungus, buttons; edible, medicinal, toxic; for dyes, potions, and mycorrhizae alike. If it can be cultivated, Chanterelle can propagate it. Gladys, Leima, and Madder, are regular clients of his.

Chanterelle himself is unperturbed at the idea of steadily becoming a host to a parasitic fungus. As long as being a mushroom doesn't prevent him from tending to the fungi around him, he's happy.
