Cybele was hatched as a nobody. Her parents were low ranking citizens of a tiny clan in the middle of Dragonhome. They were barely notable. The only thing that distinguished them from other dragons, was their immense love for their perfect daughter. She was sweet and kind and naturally good at using earth magic. Without any thought, she could manipulate earth like no other. She was well known for her ability to make earth flow like water. She was not just a mage, but an artist.

By the time Cybele was full grown, she was notorious. She was commissioned to build statues, buildings, and marvels of the natural world. Her name was a household name. She had come from nothing, but she became everything.

As Cybele got older, she began to be scouted by various mage guilds. Everyone wanted her. She would bring with her so much skill, but also reputation. Many guilds around Sornieth were greedy and merely wanted Cybele for the money she would bring in. Cybele was kind and warm, but she was not naive. She wasn’t going to just let herself be used, so she declined all the offers she got. That is, until she got a rather prestigious offer. A grand mages council that oversaw and governed all the mage guilds offered Cybele a seat at their table. They wanted her to be the head of all earth magic on Sornieth. She would be the earthen elder of all Sornieth.

Cybele knew it would be foolish to turn down the offer, so she accepted. She quickly fell into line with the other elders. They became like a family to her. Of course, her actual family was wildly proud of her. When Cybele left home to move into her council-supplied mansion, her parents sent her letters everyday. Cybele was on top of the world. She had everything she could ever want.

Cybele spent many years on the council. Within the first few months, she found herself a bit bored with her own element. As a scholar and a well accomplished mage, she decided to begin pursuing other forms of magic. She first started with other elemental magic. She found wind magic to be quite impossible and ice and lightning weren’t too much better either. Nature wasn’t horrible; it was sort of like an extension of earth, but plague was awful. All-in-all, Cybele found herself unhappy with elemental magic. It was too conflicting against her own natural order.

She next turned to stranger forms of magic. She tried alchemy, but that was more of a science and ended up in many soot covered days. She tried enchantment and illusion. They were fun, but difficult and hard to grasp. Eventually, Cybele had exhausted all forms of magic. Or at least, all legal forms of magic.

Cybele knew better. She knew practicing those types of magic would result in her banishment from the council and forever tarnish her reputation as a mage. So that was simple, she just wouldn’t practice those types of magic. But Cybele was oh so curious. It wasn’t that she wanted to break the law, not at all. She just wanted to see if she could. It was curiosity and nothing more.

Cybele began to take some trips around Sornieth. She learned about necromancy and conjuration. It was so thrilling and she had a natural talent. She was even better at forbidden magic than she was at her own elemental magic. The more Cybele learned about forbidden magic, the less she understood. Why was it forbidden? Necromancy and conjuration were gods’ work. Necromancy gave life to those who had lost it and conjuration made new life. Those fields of magic should be celebrated, not scorned.

While traveling, Cybele worked more and more with conjuration magic. It was so exciting to make new life. She constructed a small cat-like creature made of straw and wood. It was cute and simple, but exactly what Cybele wanted. She used the construct as a housing structure for her first living creature. Her magic worked perfectly. The construct was named Nyx and it became like a pet and companion for Cybele.

She returned to the council after her travels and attempted to hide her knowledge and love for the forbidden arts. Unfortunately, Nyx was a curious little creature, just like their creator. They weren’t content with staying in the manor, so they went out to hunt mice and play in the tall grass. Nyx was Cybele’s downfall.

The creature was discovered and Cybele was brought before the council. She didn’t deny anything and was consequently banished from the council. She became a pariah in the magic community. She had fallen from grace. Even her beloved parents stopped sending her letters; they were so ashamed of her. But Cybele didn’t care. She was happy. She was free to practice any magic she wanted and she was no longer being followed and scouted.

For the first time in her life, Cybele was free to be whoever she wanted and do whatever she wanted and there was absolutely no way that she’d give that up.
