Biography

DARKFLAME FIRSIFER

The only reason Darkflame remains in the Clan of Falling Embers is that his charge won't leave. He despises everything about the Clan: the leaders, particularly Shadowbird; the other dragons; and even his role as General. He would prefer to be left alone, with only his charge and possibly his familiar for company. However, secretly, he has a soft spot for his charge. Unfortunately, by now, it's not a secret, and everyone in the Clan knows about it. Darkflame despises that too.

Lady Fireborn Embercrowne inclined her head. "We could use someone with your skills," she said. "You're a good fighter, and more importantly, you've got an excellent head for strategy."

Darkflame scowled. "I'm just passing through on my Search. I can't stay."

"I understand," she said. Her voice was sonorous. She probably did understand, considering that she was a fellow Guardian. Her mate, standing by her side, looked more displeased. "But you'll always be welcome here."

Privately, Darkflame thought that he wouldn't particularly want to return. The Clan of Falling Embers was a bizarre place. He had never seen a clan so devoted to the Flamecaller, and Fireborn was the worst of them. But outwardly, he shrugged his wings. "Perhaps."

From Fireborn's side, her mate interjected. Shadowbird, her mate and charge, was a Mirror with four shrewd eyes. Darkflame didn't like him. "You are, of course, welcome to stay for a little longer, if you wish."

Darkflame couldn't hide a grimace. He didn't wish, but he supposed it was too late to leave. He would travel faster—and further away—if he slept well. "Fine."

He ate silently in the corner of the Clan of Falling Ember's great hall, glaring at anyone who approached. He had no desire to talk to any of these dragons. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Shadowbird speaking with a blue female Guardian, who stood out among the fiery tones of most of the other dragons in the Clan. Wave, he thought, the Water Representative. Apparently she was related to the Clan Leaders somehow. He paid no mind to it.

He wished he had when Shadowbird somehow managed to intercept him as he flew past the Clan of Falling Ember's territory months later. Had Shadowbird consulted his Clan's only seer to find Darkflame?

"Ah, Darkflame!" Shadowbird said. He was strange for a Mirror, far too fond of chatter. "How lovely to see you." All four of his eyes were unblinkingly fixed on Darkflame.

Darkflame didn't bother with pleasantries. "What do you want."

"Since you're passing by, you might as well take advantage of the Clan's hospitality," Shadowbird said.

There was no real way to refuse. He could have just left, but Lady Fireborn wouldn't be happy about him disrespecting her charge like that. Hissing in irritation, Darkflame said, "Fine."

He followed on wing as Shadowbird ran over the black rock of the Ashfall Waste, and they soon reached the lair of the Clan. Darkflame set down and folded his wings. He followed on foot as he entered the underground lair carved into volcanic rock. Down they went, claws skittering over rock smoothed by the passage of many dragons, before they emerged into the same hall as the one he had eaten in the last time he was here.

This time, the hall was empty except for a few Mirrors, all lean enough to border on scrawny, standing in the middle. He didn't recognize them from the last time he was here, when all of the dragons of the Clan had crowded into the hall. They must have been new members. Two older Mirrors, a male and a female, stood on either side of a third. She was an ordinary-looking female Mirror, someone who would never have stood out among the dragons of the Clan.

When Darkflame saw her, he knew.

For a heartbeat, she was the only thing that existed, the only thing in all of Sornieth that mattered. He would protect her. It was his purpose for existing. She was his purpose for existing.

With great difficulty, he tore his gaze away from her, whipping his head around and recalling the time he had seen Shadowbird and Wave speaking. Shadowbird's face was perfectly smug.

Pleasantly, he said, "May I introduce you to Seraphina?"
