“Hey.”

Esker nearly jumped out of his skin at the resonant voice speaking up behind him. Only Giantsdeep. “‘Singer’s holy scales, Giantsdeep.” He sighed. “What is it?”

Giantsdeep grinned at the mild oath and settled down beside him. “Seems lonely up here.”

Esker looked around, down the cliff before them at the almost endless expanse of ocean beneath them; then up at the sky, the twinkling sparks further than he could imagine. “A little,” he said. “Sometimes Zimri or Timberhearth come talk to me.”

“Great view, though.” The great Snapper turned his nose up to the sparkling above as Esker had. “You ever consider the irony of an Earth dragon with as high an interest in the stars as yours?” He didn’t look back down.

Esker spread out his charts in front of him. “I suppose that is odd, isn’t it. But part of Earth is knowing where you are.”

“On quite a large scale, hm?” Giantsdeep wondered. He flapped his wings gently in the breeze and rose.

“Oh, you aren’t leaving, are you?” Esker asked, almost surprising himself.

“Well, yes and no. What other excellent vantage points are there around here?” He swung his head from side to side, eyeing the cliff and a distant rise.

Esker brightened, curling and springing from the ground and popping out his wings. “That is, actually, a very good question.”

Esker Attlerock is a starstruck Earth dragon, interested in the rotations of the planets above and the distant stars he’s learned are like their own sun. Of course, they are too far away to affect them like their closer one does. His very first memory is of looking up at the stars with his siblings, though none of them seemed as interested as he was.

His first goal was to go to Lightweaver’s University to study. He didn’t know what the future would hold for a student of the stars (and, truth be told, he still doesn’t), but he was more than happy to look and see. Esker isn’t sure if it is his Earth groundedness showing, but he was never as energetic as other Spirals. In fact, most of the time he seemed to be the most shy dragon anyone had ever met. Fortunately, it didn’t stop him from making friends.

Esker made many friends at school, some of which he still sees regularly as they continue in their studies. Timberhearth lives nearby, and Solanum (or “the Interloper” as Timberhearth calls him) drops by every now and again to say hello. However, Esker usually finds himself looking at the stars or at his campfire alone at night with hardly a visitor to recall. He supposes it’s because he’s up so late and sleeps during the day, when most other dragons are most active.

Eventually, Esker hopes to build his own little observatory on the cliffs of Wind territory, looking over the ocean and away toward Earth. The light pollution from Lightning and Fire is still a long ways away, and he hopes that Wind will continue to suffice with dimly glowing lanterns for a long time.

Most dragons that meet Esker are surprised to find he is what he is. An Earth dragon so interested in the stars. A relaxed and meandering Spiral. An introvert that loves the idea of a crowd of friends. He’s quite lonely, so any visitors are very much appreciated, even if he doesn’t know what to say. Aren’t you forgetting someone?

Esker never considered himself intelligent enough for any of “those hard sciences,” as he calls them, but he admires those that are. Aceso is one such dragon, intensely interested in the scientific method of discovering how dragons work, what happens when they don’t, and how to get them back to a state of health. Like Esker, she doesn’t put much stock in magic. Everything she tries, she does carefully, taking meticulous notes. She also mumbles to herself, which Esker loves to listen in on. He’s not nearly as methodical about it as Aceso is, but he also likes to learn and know.

   » Zimri little scout
════════════════════════
.
Zimri is Esker’s closest friend, their association starting with Esker requesting to use the gate Zimri had built for travel back to his native Lightning clan. Unfortunately for Esker, seeing the stars from Lightning is quite difficult with the artificial lights and pops of electricity. He hasn’t gone back since his first trip there, but he still gets visits from Zimri somewhat often. They talk about travel and other theoretical subjects, helping one another with their various tests and ideas. Zimri has little use for stars, and Esker little use for portals. It doesn’t stop them from having use for each other, though.

SIGNAL - random rotations

Jel4ZLl.png
Esker discovered this curious jeweler while at university, a strange little creature that seemed to be constantly looking for something no one else could see. He calls it Signal, since it seems to hear something no one else can, tilting its head this way and that and consulting its gem as though it has some kind of compass inside. It whips this way and that, heading off in one direction before turning around and going another, always listening. Esker has followed it on its quest more than once, but it always seems to end up right back where it started. He makes sure it’s fed and knows that, no matter how long it’s been gone, it will turn up again eventually.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Esker loves doing just about anything with his friends. Of course, his job means he doesn’t get out very much and is at the mercy of their visits. But it’s worth savoring every moment when they do. I can’t wait to play with the whole group again.

» Attlerock’s full name is Esker Attlerock. He prefers to be called Esker.

» At Lightweaver’s University, Esker studied astronomy. Though he knows it didn’t go exceedingly well, he minored in sociology and psychology.
