┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
The little Fae perched on the end of a ladle, spinning slowly clockwise in a pot of soup. His father chopped various ingredients next to the blue light of the fire, adding each one to the pot while humming a cheery tune. As he did, glorious aromas filled the air, causing the little Fae’s mouth to water.
“Remember Hallow, the stew must be stirred clockwise,” Calcifer instructed. Hallow nodded fiercely, focused on his task. When the stew was finally ready, Hallow helped his father serve it to their clan, ensuring there was enough for all present that evening. But the young Fae had noticed that there was one dragon who was not served: a Wildclaw named Yokai. When he later asked Calcifer why, his father explained that Yokai was of the spirit world-- he could never consume food from the mortal realm. Hallow was astonished, taken aback at his father’s dismissive attitude. He made a silent promise: one day, he would learn to cook something that even spirit dragons could eat. Hallow continued his informal culinary education from his father during the day, but at night, he would sneak from his den into the clan’s kitchen and experiment. He had no idea how to create “spirit food,” as he called it, but he had to start somewhere. Making sure to clean his mess before Calcifer woke in the morning, Hallow would sneak back into his den mere minutes before sunrise. It took nearly two years, but one night, he succeeded. Or, at least he thought he had. He had produced a beautifully roasted Poultrygeist, seasoned only with ingredients from the spirit world themselves. It had been tricky, given the tendency of some ingredients to vanish before he could use them and that the dish had to be roasted in spirit fire, which proved difficult to conjure, but finally, he had made something that looked delicious. Of course, he couldn’t smell or taste his own creation (it was spirit food after all), so he took it straight to Yokai, rousing the Wildclaw from slumber. Yokai blinked blearily, his nostrils flaring as he smelled food for the first time. Instantly, his eyes snapped open and he took in the extravagant feast Hallow offered him, devouring it one giant bite and grinning contentedly as he chewed. The little chef was beaming, his chest puffed out with pride. Following his initial success, Hallow decided he couldn’t be bothered to make mortal food again. After all, there were thousands of talented chefs across Sornieth, but not one of them could make food for spirits. Leaving a few recipes behind so his father could replicate Yokai’s favorite dishes, Hallow set off on his own: he had customers to serve. |
