“Don't make this out to be something it's not - it's business, nothing more.” A distasteful business, some say, but apparently not distasteful enough to dissuade the customers who do arrive at her door. Desperate, all of them. Not all for the same thing, no - sometimes it’s power, sometimes greed, and for those she pities the most, love. Whether they find what they seek is not her concern. She offers a service, and that is all. What they expect: dim candlelight, arcane symbols, skulls and specimen jars with murky, mysterious contents. What they get: a straightforward discussion of terms, a contract signed (in ink, not blood), a receipt after they hand over the gold. Also the skulls. A little theater helps the business. The raisings themselves are another bit of theater. The actual magic needed is rather simple, actually - a mixture of herbs and chemicals she prepares in advance, painted into a symbol to channel the power. From there, it’s just pouring enough breath in for the animation. She’s found, though, that adding a couple dozen candles, some more skulls and smoke, gives her customers confidence - confidence that she’ll succeed, and that she’s worth the hefty price. The dead revived, her work is mostly over. She ignores the grieving loved ones saying their last goodbyes, listens idly to investigators interrogating those who died before their time. Those after something illicit usually pay her extra to make herself scarce, which she does - no sense in creating trouble. Once her customer’s business is concluded, she sends the dead back to their rest. A simple transaction completed, all parties benefiting. What’s so distasteful about that? ⚔ SHAYA (a rival) Shaya firmly believes that the spirits of the dead should not be disturbed, and frequently tries to convince Avarin to see that. Avarin thinks that's cute of her. |
