"I am Clarion, lieutenant to the Faerie Knight Alvan. How can I be of assistance?"
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Interlude looked around in fear. He had been separated from Velveteen again and he wasn’t really sure where he was. He didn’t mean to wander so far from the nursery; it just happened. The dragons looked strange and he didn’t recognize any of the landmarks. That’s when Interlude caught a glimpse of delicate pink and purple feathers. The tiny imperial hatchling pulled his wings in tight to his body and tucked his tail between his legs; he had no desire to get stepped on or hurt. He wormed his way through the crowd until he found the skydancer he was looking for.

“Clarion?” Interlude’s tiny voice squeaked out. Despite being young, he was still about half the size of the full grown skydancer. Even as the skydancer turned around and smiled kindly, Interlude cowered. Velveteen told him to find Clarion or Alvon if he ever got lost, but being around strangers was scary.

“Hello, young one,” Clarion said, ducking his head slightly so he could meet the hatchling’s eyes. “Is there something you need help with?”

Interlude fiddled nervously with the edges of his leatherous wings. The crowd streamed around the pair. Some dragons told them to get moving or yelled at them, but Clarion didn’t seem bothered in the slightest. Interlude was, however, nervous and bothered. He could barely focus on the question posed to him. “Oh, um, well, Velveteen, you know her? She, well, she told me.. She told me if I got lost, that, uh, that I should find you. Well, you or Alvon. And uh I guess I’m really lucky that I found you…” The hatchling trailed off from his babbling, overwhelmed with his nervousness.

Clarion laughed lightly. It was a pleasant sound, like windchimes in the breeze. He playfully shoved the hatchling’s shoulder. “Take a deep breath, kid. I’ll get you back to Velveteen. It’ll all be okay. Do you trust me?” Interlude nodded emphatically. Clarion’s smile grew. “Wonderful! It’d be fastest if we flew there. I’ll go slow so you can keep up, okay?” Interlude nodded once more.

With the help of his powerful legs, Clarion pushed off of the ground and took to a slow pace. Interlude joined him in the sky, albeit, a tad bit clumsier. That being said, the hatchling was nearly as big as Clarion, so he had no trouble keeping up. Once they got to a comfortable pace for the hatchling, Clarion resumed his conversation. The hatchling was still nervous and Clarion knew conversation would make it better.

“Do you have a name, kid?” Clarion asked, looking across his wing.

“Er, yes sir. It’s Interlude.”

Clarion nodded. “Interlude, huh? Interesting.”

Clarion had heard of the child. He had apparently been bought at fodder prices in the market. Tidewatcher went out for alchemical ingredients, but came back with the child. It was quite a surprise to the other when Tidewatcher opened the box. It wasn’t full of vials and ingredients, but rather a little imperial. Clarion’s own story was much the same.

Clarion’s parents didn’t intend to have any children. They had a nest of three children and they immediately sent them all off to the fodder market. Clarion was terrified. He knew what it meant. He saw the others being carted away by mercenaries and warriors. Clarion knew he would be forced to fight for dominance. He had no desire to do that. He prayed day and night to the eleven that he would be saved from the horrible fodder market. His room was cold and his blanket was thin. There were little animals in the walls and he never quite felt safe.

One day, a kind dragon came and snatched Clarion away from the greedy talons of mercenaries. The kind dragon brought him to a place called Future Fields. He had his own room and a pile of pillows. He had friends and toys and he was able to regularly clean his feathers. It was wonderful. It felt like a forever home to Clarion, but he knew it wouldn’t last. He was told it was just a temporary stop before he went to his forever home.

When Clarion was finally rescued from Future Fields, he was overjoyed. He was brought to the wonderful Serene Isles. It was beautiful, like an eternal garden. Clarion had never felt safer or more at ease. Being in the Serene Isles was like a breath of fresh air after a lifetime of smog.

Clarion shook his head, bringing himself back into the present. The hatchling still looked nervous. Clarion sighed to himself. He got too wrapped up in his own mind. He angled his wings and touched down in front of the nursery. Interlude did a sort of crash landing, but managed it alright.

Velveteen came rushing out of the building and pulled Interlude into a hug. She wrapped her wings around him and pressed his head against her chest. “Oh thank the eleven! I’m so glad you’re safe Interlude! Do you know how worried I was about you? You shouldn’t wander off on your own like that!” Interlude buried his head in her soft feathers and allowed himself to be overwhelmed with the sweet smell and the sound of her heartbeat.

“Thank you, Clarion,” Velveteen murmured while running her talons through Interlude’s mane. “I should’ve kept an eye on him. I’m so sorry you had to go through the trouble-”

Clarion waved away her concerns. “It’s okay, really. He’s a good kid. He’s sweet. I’m sure he’ll grow to be compassionate and loving, just like you.”

Velveteen looked at him for a moment. He really was a kind dragon and a perfect gentleman. Her expression softened. “Well, thank you again. I’m sure you have lots to do, so I don’t want to keep you.”

Clarion nodded. “Ah, yes. Of course. I’ll be seeing you again, Velveteen.”

Clarion pushed off the ground and took the sky. He allowed himself to take one more look at Velveteen and Interlude. He supposed next time he saw the hatchling, Interlude would be bigger than him.

‘Oh how time flies,’ Clarion thought. ‘This was the least I could do for the kid.’
