B I O G R A P H Y

When Spears left the shadows, she didn’t know what she was getting into.

The day had started out like the rest, really. She was summoned to her clan’s Leader, for she was part of the guard. Sighing, she trudged out of her home, into the gloom. She closed her eyes, thinking of what it would have been this time. It was one of her neighbors who had upset them, she thought. She’d have to twist their arm, maybe break a wing, to get them to do whatever would satisfy their majesty, who really didn’t deserve the title. Or care for the clan’s welfare, only their own. Opening her eyes, Spears saw other dragons scurrying out of her way.

What a mess, She thought. Her reputation was bad enough, before the Leader hired her to become some sort of royal thug. That only made it worse. Then the Leader started sending her out to strong-arm dragons who had done something to upset them into paying a bit too much treasure to ask forgiveness. Usually something silly like looking at the clan leader wrong was enough to get slammed with a fine, usually at least 37 kilos of treasure. If someone didn’t have it,— well, Spears didn’t want to think of that. Because Spears had made it to the leader’s cavern. Bowing her head to the guards stationed outside, she went inside.

Something was off. She could taste it.

Fear.

It was coming from beside where the leader usually rested. It was enough to make her feel like she was choking in it.

“Spears,” rasped the Leader, in what they probably thought was a welcoming tone. “I’m glad you made it so soon.”

“Yes, I am yours to command,” Spears replied. She was probably the only dragon in the clan with the Leader’s respect. The fear in the room was still there. She had an idea why.

She hoped she was wrong.

The Leader nodded. “That is true, Spears. Tell me, to whom do you owe your life?”

“You, Leader.”

“Very good. Now, what if I told you to dispose of a few troublesome hatchlings?”

Spears felt ill. Coercing dragons into unfair deals was one thing.

“W-What do you mean by—“

“Ahp-upup! Have you forgotten who asked the questions around here?”

I sure do, what about you?

“No, Leader. Please, forgive me. I spoke out of turn.” How could she play this off right? “I-it’s just that such a brilliant dragon such as yourself can mean many different things at once, and your humble servant is nowhere near as smart. I-“

“Spears,” Leader growled, “You know as well as I do you did not misunderstand me. Your hesitation had told me enough. Now, go dispose of these hatchlings immediately. I want their wings as proof that you have done the job.” Swinging his tail to the left, they flung a cage into the middle of the room. “Now get to it!” They roared.

Shaking from the fear and anger she had held back for so long, she felt numb. Spears picked up the cage, and left. Once she left the clan’s borders, she set it down, and dropped. She stared into the hatchlings eyes.

Yes. Forcing dragons to pay much, much more than was necessary over accidentally spilling things in the Leader’s way was one bad thing.

But having to kill two Skydancer hatchlings was another, very terrible thing.
