Empire of Death: Order of Bone

To say he wasn't a dragon at one time would be a lie. Asuras had once been a living breathing skydancer with parents and siblings. He'd once had hopes and dreams... Well, perhaps even now he had those. However, the happy emotions he'd once felt had disappeared. Rather than feeling joyous at achieving goals all he wanted was more. It was like a hunger in him. Life, if one could call it that, had been like this ever since the ritual to attempt to bring him back to life had gone wrong.

Dark magic corrupted the Light magic that coursed through his veins. Those who'd performed the ritual should've known something influenced by the Shade wouldn't go as planned, but perhaps they'd been too desperate to bring back a dragon they'd loved. While not possessed by the Shade itself, Asuras returned to his body as a different dragon. He felt detached from the memories of his old life. The skydancer recalled them well but the emotional attachment to those in the memories didn't exist anymore. Asuras would leave the tomb alone, leaving those who'd been so desperate to see him to mourn the loss of him a second time.

Brought back to the mortal plane, the demonic dragon found he couldn't leave. For a long time he wandered, making deals here and there for his own gain. At any point in time, the summoners could've released him and he'd fade away... but they didn't. Nor did Asuras come across any danger that could kill him once more—then again, he wasn't trying to die twice. Other dragons could do the dirty work for him. Still, it was annoying to feel the tether to those who summoned him back constantly tugging. If they gave the command to return, he'd have no choice. Yet, they didn't seem to realize that. Then one day... the tether felt less substantial. More time passed and it got weaker and weaker.

His grip on the moral realm ended the moment the last of them drew their last breath. For a time, Asuras once again disappeared from the face of Sornieth. It was okay. This gave him time to plot and decide what he'd want to do... and maybe how to allow himself to control when he wanted to appear and disappear from the mortal plane.

The next time the skydancer found himself in Sornieth, it was at the bidding of a tundra named Lucifi. He was a young dragon yet leader of a subclan within an empire he'd one day inherit from its current ruler. Asuras could've left much like he'd done with the old friends and family who'd done this to him. Lucifi had goals though along with a need for advice, and if Asuras could still love anything, it was creating strife. So he helped the tundra with the clan unbeknownst to the dragons living there, always working from the shadows. Genuine aid to the young prince with sprinkles of ideas that could cause chaos.

The Order of Bone functioned well but the idea to keep only useful dragons in the clan became a tipping point. Asuras watched as Lucifi ruled with an iron paw, sending dragons to their deaths out in the wilds of Plague if they couldn't find a place in the clan. This would eventually give rise to an emperor dragon, something that was quelled and contained before the poor monstrosity could even fully awaken. The strife he'd been after was also quickly extinguished, Lucifi getting off without punishment considering the only dragon who knew of his role to play in the beast's creation was too fearful to speak.

A mistake on his part, even if perhaps he could've revealed himself to condemn the tundra himself. Lucifi consults him less now but the command to stay and keep hidden from the clan keeps Asuras from wandering off to find new places to spread chaos. He still tries to plant seeds of doubt and ambition in the tundra, worming away at his own ambitions of leading the empire and at his prideful nature tainting them with darkness. One day perhaps, it'll lead to something big. When it does... He'll be watching from the shadows.
