A jovial Gaoler, the owner of Something Borrowed, the Rest's general store and thrift shop. Sergei takes great pride in his shop, and will happily talk about the history of his wares in an attempt to get customers to buy them. Once he's started telling a story, there is no way to stop him. Born to a secluded outpost of Gaolers in the Hewn City, Sergei's primal eyes were something of a shock. The outpost's inhabitants were sworn to the Icewarden, and had been for generations, so the birth of one with such a powerful blessing from the Lightweaver was strange and unexpected. Despite their confusion, the outpost heralded Sergei as a holy figure, especially once they learned he could read emotions from objects. This power is unstable and unreliable, and only really works with deeply treasured items, but it was enough for Sergei to be named the Reader of Truth and venerated in the outpost as a dragon with ice primal eyes would. Unfortunately, the outpost was forced to evacuate when the emperor Luminax awoke and began terrorizing the Sunbeam Ruins. As it had already destroyed another Gaoler outpost, many of Sergei's kin decided to attempt to fight the beast, and tried to bring him with them. Sergei refused, unwilling to put himself in danger, and fled south across the Shifting Expanse. He joined a merchant caravan, and quickly picked up both how to run a business and any interesting trinkets he could find. Once arriving at the Rest, Sergei set up shop selling basic necessities alongside various knickknacks and antiques. He keeps away from most of the other Gaolers living in the city, but enjoys chatting with Artemus. He also readily employs the Rest's internal favor system, and almost every resident has done him some favor or another. |
