ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
It's the end of summer, and a beastly dry heat has settled over the land. The air shimmers in a stale, dusty haze. Nothing stirs, not even birds, and the air is hot enough to suck the moisture right out of your lungs if you open your mouth. Shade is precious and spread thin, the leaves beginning to shrivel and curl into themselves. Any trace of spring green has been bleached and faded by the unrelenting sun, and all the grasses are parched, rattling husks, sharp and brittle. Autumn is still too far off to promise any relief with its cool breezes, frosty mornings, and occasional torrential thunderstorms.

It's wildfire season. A hot, erratic wind scours the parched land, whipping up dust and debris into piles of tinder that are ripe for burning. This precarious time of year, a harsh void between seasons, is when Creosote thrives. This incendiary little creature creeps up from dried out stream beds, out of sappy hollows in dying pine forests, and stretches its wings gladly under the sun's glare. It flutters like a fallen leaf on each gust of wild afternoon wind. The tip of its tail snags on bleached twigs and withered pine needles, and flame licks at their undersides. Each silent pit-pat of Creosote's little feet leaves a tiny blackened ember on the branch, an ember that needs only a little heat and breath to kindle into a steady burn.

Creosote is the initial spark, the first innocuous flare that fuels the catastrophic blazes that devastate parts of Sorineth each fall. It delights in every campfire left unquenched, every strike of lightning in a forest full of kindling, every reflective surface that's capable of focusing sunlight just so into a bed of dead grasses. To an extent, fire is healthy, but this creature thrives where wilderness has been left untended, the undergrowth allowed to become choked with weeds. It encourages each controlled burn to jump its bounds and fan itself into a proper roaring firestorm. If you see what appears to be a smear of soot in the undergrowth, a fiery flash in the August haze, beware. It could be a little matchstick flicker of a dragon sowing the first sparks of destruction.
