TRAVELLING DRAGON
~______~
Uh-oh, looks like this plucky Snapper wandered a little too far from their home lair (452562, Hyzenthlaay), and now they’re off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt them, we'd really appreciate it if you instead could just return them to their original home via the Crossroads, send them off in the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread (warning, you will get another traveler in return if you do this), or if you don’t want another traveler in return, this rest hub. You can also adopt them permanently if you don’t want them leaving your lair - just contact Hyzenthlaay and let her know (it’s good for her notes)!
Many people have worked very hard on this traveling dragon, and exalting them would be an absolute shame. Please don’t do it!

Xanthus is new enough to this "being a dragon" thing, no less his newfound purpose as a traveler! Stitched from cleaning rags, Xanthus was meant to be his home clan's live-in janitor. Not content to spend his newfound life on dirt, he instead decided to wander off into the greater world - no different than most travelers in that regard. Xanthus knows little beyond how to keep a den clean, but is eager to expand his knowledge in the typical Snapper thirst for knowledge - here's hoping he can keep his wits about him enough to not be taken advantage of during his travels!
Xanthus himself aims to please, unsure of how much of his drive to do so is based in his birthright. Questions about his purpose tend to keep him up at night - will he eventually default to the purpose of his creation? Or does he get to decide what he will be? It scares him to think that he will be driven to return to his clan one day by forces beyond his control...

It was fortunate for this little patchwork dragon that Tenebrous caught him in the edge of his scrying pool and went out with his brothers to find him. Now, Tenebrous, Cosmos, and Vesper are many things, but tactful is not one of them. Being stopped in the middle of a road by a yammering pearlcatcher, an awestruck tundra, and a glowing little dragon who seemed determined to bring you meet to their clan would have seriously worried most dragons, but Xanthus was just excited to meet new people. He was afraid he would stand out in these glittery little dragons' clan, and he told the trio so, but they seemed amused by that and ushered him towards "the hollow", as they called it, Vesper chattering all the time.
Xanthus arrived at the hollow, and realized that standing out was the least of his worries. Who would give him a second glance when a half-grown dragon made entirely of metal feathers, ungainly legs, and dozens of bright green eyes regularly hurled himself across the clearing in pursuit of a bluish hatchling that was bigger than most grown dragons, and when a tundra that emitted brilliant blue light often sat scrying with his mother, who looked like a pool of night sky and could apparently read the future, and his father, who shone like an emerald come to life? An excitable, anxious dragon made of fabric and batting blended right in.
Xanthus soon found himself comfortable and quite at home. He insisted on keeping the hollow tidy, but he worked efficiently and discovered he often had time for other things. He would spend long hours in the evening learning to read- Odin, a soft-spoken Gaoler, was a patient teacher and Xanthus was a quick learner. He'd listen to Starlily, the dragon made of night sky, and Ijou, the living emerald, teaching their oldest son how to see the future. Ijou explained that it was a hereditary trait and there was no way Xanthus could learn how to scry, but the patchwork dragon didn't mind and listened to their lessons with interest, captivated by the magic. Seeing Tenebrous draw glowing runes in the pool water reminded hm of the runes etched into his own fabric, and so began a need to learn, stronger than he'd ever had before.
One day, many months later, Xanthus bid the dragons in the hollow farewell. He now had a purpose and a drive. He wanted to know how he had come to life, and he was determined to figure it out. Sativa wished him safe travels, and Vesper and Cosmos tackled him in a hug before Ijou quickly whispered that the future seemed fair for him, but that he'd need more than what he had already if he was to make it to that future.
Lyre led him to the border of their jurisdiction and acknowledged his gratitude with a simple nod. Xanthus stepped onto the dusty road that his footprints had faded from weeks ago, and walked on.

Xanthus found himself at the border of the Plague and Shadow territories next, realizing that he could make himself at home with the many types of dragons that lived there. Of course, he was the first dragon to arrive at the clan that was made up of stitched material, making him the subject of attention. Xanthus didn't mind, he actually enjoyed explaining himself (to the best of his knowledge, anyway) and even learning more about being a dragon. He even found love - a fellow travelling dragon known as EggRoll took interest to him.
Somehow, he even had two half-ragdoll hatchlings of his own. After his long stay, he finally decided that it was time for him to leave - but he promised he'd return someday, and hoped he'd even get to live in the clan.
