That's a lie, he thinks, you have two right now, and both are the right age already. He doesn't say anything, of course. Just stares down, as one should in the presence of a monarch. Now, she will rightfully make an example out of him, to remind all others of the rules. Because he played his cards wrong, and was caught cheating.

Aiden can't go back home, he would be humiliated even more than he already was. Within his family, being ambitious was encouraged, but Aiden never was "ambitious". He wanted power, and wasn't ashamed of any methods of obtaining it. Forgotten knowledge, forbidden sources, occult practices. Anything that could get him power, raw and genuine. He knew about the deal Asmodeus made, years ago, and from a young age he knew it was his only option. As he grew older, he heard more and more - about the deal, and about the family he was so eager to join. Every rumor, every little whisper about royal family, he would collect. While his siblings learn how to fight and how to flatter, Aiden spent his days in studies and his nights in practicing. Sometimes, he dreamt about the library in White City - the size of a small village, they say. He heard it was available to all pilgrims, but the small part of it was reserved only for the crown. What secrets could it hold?
A chance, it was all he could ask for.

Once in a while, when it's time for a new member to join the royal family, an invitations would arrive to anyone who wishes to participate. All young and unwed would be asked to travel to the White City, where the masquerade would be arranged. It was a tradition for many years now, an old-fashioned one, but respected and dearly loved.
