Biography

qSgEtrr.png

Two male Mirrors loped along the path from the Wyrmwound. They had completed their mission and were returning home to Water. The elder, Deathstrike, was the Plague Representative to Clan Aquaurora. His duties frequently required him to return to the elite lairs of the Scarred Wasteland for counsel.

The younger, Courage, was the son of two warriors. He had been born in the Plague Realm; his sister, Dedication, had been returned there as a tribute, where she served the Plaguebringer willingly. But her family ties were strong, and no one forbade her brother from visiting on occasion. Particularly when he was accompanied by Deathstrike, who, despite not being of the Necromancer race, had managed to imitate, in a small way, the ways of the Necroservi. He had conquered the Mother's touch within him and was able to infect others, and even to control the virulency of the strain emitted.

Courage admired the older Mirror greatly, but had no desire to serve the Mother in that way himself. The immunities that had been gifted him on the day of his birth served him well enough, and he had participated in the grateful rituals of his heritage. But he was anxious to return home to his pack: his mother and father, and...his heart skipped a beat as he remembered the beautiful and deadly Skydancer mage waiting for him. He put on a burst of speed and was around a bend in the road before Deathstrike had time to react.

He growled and dashed after the young Mirror, nearly tripping over him as he rounded the bend. "Plague and fire! What do you think you're doing, you young idiot?"

Courage was reaching out toward a small hatchling, coaxing her to come closer. Although she was clearly suffering a great deal of pain, she shook her small head and backed away.

Deathstrike clamped a claw onto Courage's arm. "Leave her," he said shortly. "It seems cruel, yes. And I can't think what parent would force their child into the Trials at this age. But she must survive on her own. It is the Will of the Mother."

The young Mirror stared at the hatchling in distress. "But..."

The hatchling half-walked, half-crawled farther from the path. Her laboured breathing grew raspier as she struggled toward a scraggly plant. Her whole body trembled from the effort of reaching up and snatching the plant, but she managed on her own. She lay unmoving for a moment. Then, slowly but deliberately, she began to chew the life-giving sap of the herb.

"She knows better than you what her touch would do to you at this time," Deathstrike warned. "She has yet to master the infection. One touch, and you would be dead." He touched the younger one's shoulder comfortingly. "She will survive," he said, with more confidence than he felt. "It is in her blood."

"Doesn't anyone care?"

"She's being overseen by some Necromancer. Trust me, they have their ways of monitoring. Even if she didn't infect you, you'd likely face death for interfering with the Trials."

Courage stared at the tiny Mirror, who was crawling just a bit more strongly away from him and back in the direction of the Wyrmwound. "The blessing of the Mother be on you, little one," he called out despairingly. It seemed more like a curse at the moment.

But the disease-riddled hatchling turned her head toward him, and almost smiled. Then she disappeared behind a rock, and he could no longer hear or sense her presence.

Perhaps thirty days later...
Courage was in the training fields with his new mate, Precision. Neither of them had any regret for her decision to become a Mirror, but it was difficult re-learning how to fight as a warrior rather than a mage. As they sparred each other, they were interrupted by a slight cough.

Courage turned to see a rather thin pre-adolescent Mirror setting down her pack. The virulent strains of the Plaguebringer had been restricted to a row of neat stripes down her back. Her crests were not fully grown, and her wings appeared still too short and stubby to fully support her.

"Hi," she said softly.

"Hi," he replied, puzzled. "Do I know you?"

The female Mirror responded with the words and tone of one far beyond her few months of life. "You pitied me during my trials. It was a foolish deed; one the Mother would not have favored. But it was a kind one. The strength of your caring, I believe, stayed with me and kept me strong." Her confidence faltered. "I thought...perhaps, I could live here?"

Courage took a step toward her, but was shoved aside by Precision, who swept the Mirror girl into an embrace. "As if we'd turn you out!"

Relieved that his mate approved, he also hugged the young Necromancer. "I assume you passed your trials successfully, then. Did they give you a name?"

"Yes and yes. My name is Achlys."

"I'm Courage, and this is my mate Precision." He looked over his shoulder, and saw his parents and the other two Mirror warriors of the clan coming towards them. "Welcome to our pack."

Notes:
  • Seer of the Plaguebringer's will. Adjunct to the Seer's Den of Clan Aquaurora.
  • She is a great-great-granddaughter of Kishna, one of the most powerful on the Necromantic Council.
  • nYnLHIc.png
  • She's still a very young dragon, so her personality wavers a lot between shyness and confidence in her deadly abilities.
  • Didn't really have a childhood before the trials, trials aged her
  • Her adoptive parents, Courage and Precision, try to be supportive but don't really understand her.
  • Deathstrike is probably her closest confidant. Deathswirl is too nuts.
  • Has difficulty relating to other dragons her own age
  • Wants to be friends with Oilslick, but she is turned off by the other dragon's rejection of her Plague heritage
  • Phantasmagoria and Woundwort are too stand-offish and fanatical for her
  • Like Deathstrike, she teeters on the line of compassion and "the Will of the Mother", but she probably ends up less compassionate than he due to her indoctrination
  • She has one Neutralized Ghoul servus, Erixitl, whom she neutralized herself. The Fae follows her around with slavish devotion and annoys her half to death.
  • Her mate is Wenyihuo (Fire Imp Mancer)
  • Trained as a Kelp Beds Beast
  • Aspires to rise the ranks of the Necromantic Council to be Advocating rank; any more than that would require here to leave her Water clan home, which at the moment she is loath to do.
  • Primary specialty is Ambassador
  • Secondary specialty is Oracle
  • Tertiary specialty is Healer

"For me?" Achlys stared at the writhing circle of rot and contamination in the claws of the elder Plague Representative of Clan Aquaurora.

"For you. Take it, please."

"I--I don't know what to say. I was quite content with my birdskull necklace."

"You may have the gifts of a Seer, but something tells me that you will need to be far more than that in the coming days." The older Mirror lifted his left foreleg slightly, where the sigil of the Mother had rotted deep into his flesh. He kept it bound in bandages so as not to alarm his Water clanmates.

"Well..." Achlys gingerly took the magical halo and moved it near her head. It sprang up and encircled her brow as though it belonged there.

"You'll wear it much better than I have," Deathstrike said. He grinned. "Besides, it looks better with your scales than with mine."

Necrotober 2021 Day 9: Familiar

Achlys bowed in the presence of the Ruling Councillor, for all he was so small. She glanced over her shoulder at the sand-swept floor of her cave, where the water rarely reached, and felt ashamed.
"Don't bother," said Alden the Necroservus. He flittered inside, followed by his companion, a Deadland Disciple of the Plaguebringer. Achlys watched her uncertainly. These Beastclan were sometimes said to be more in tune with the Mother's Will than even most Necros, which was a sobering and uncomfortable thought.
Her Hydra Scorpion scuttled back respectfully.
"If I may, what brings you to my clan, Master?"
"Master," Alden scoffed, flicking his frills derisively. "Only my Servi call me that. My name is Alden."
"Councillor Alden, then."
"If you insist." Alden settled his frills into a narrative position. "Certain of the Councillors feel that your talents are wasted here in the Sea. They'd like to see you closer to home, ascending the ranks, perhaps even becoming a Guiding Councillor one day."
"Certain of the Councillors," Achlys repeated vaguely. With a sudden clarity she felt that she knew which ones he meant: ones who had opposed her more tolerant policies toward Necromancers living and serving in other flights. They wanted her close and ambitious; they knew how to handle that. Distant and radical was more difficult to handle.
"Yes." Alden's crests barely moved, but that slight twitch signaled private amusement. Achlys thanked the Plaguebringer for her mute Fae Servus forcing her to learn more FaeSL than the average dragon.
"I am honored by these Councillors' recommendation," she said, choosing her words carefully, "but my work is here. I currently have no further ambition than to revive and multiply the reach of the Water Necromantic Outreach Council."
"I told them you'd say that," Alden grunted. He flicked his frills in satisfaction. Then he beckoned to the Deadland Disciple. "In light of your lofty goals and the fine work you are doing here, I present you with this acolyte of the Mother."
"Wait...what?"
"She is assigned to you. She will help to keep your mind fixed on the Mother at all times." Alden folded back his crests smugly. "Notice that she is not an Enduring Goblin, sent as the eyes of the Mother upon you at all times."
Achlys turned this over in her mind. She could not refuse such a highly esteemed familiar from the Council. And what Alden said was true--she was not being given a goblin, which gift was frequently a two-edged sword--they were reputedly spies for the Council. It may have been a ploy to keep her loyal to the Council, but it wasn't a threat.
"Does she have a name?"
"She has whatever name you decide to give her." Alden landed on the floor and stroked the Hydra Scorpion's sleek back. "And this fellow I'll be taking back with me. He'll be reassigned." He trundled toward the door, the Hydra Scorpion following.
"Won't you need assistance getting home?" Achlys asked, a little worried for the frail elderly councillor.
"I have my Servus." Alden pulled out a whistle and blew. A smallish Imperial landed in front of them and looked at Alden and the scorpion.
"Yes, Master?"
"Let's go, Finch." Alden climbed onto her nose and the scorpion onto her leg. She shuddered just a little but readied herself for takeoff.
Achlys' mate Wenyihuo flew down just then. "Councillor Alden!" he said in surprise. "What gives us this honor?"
Alden did not get a chance to reply, because the small Imperial gave a squeak of fear and bolted. The sound of Alden's shouts of annoyance could barely be heard over the roar of her passing.
"Ah," Wenyihuo said softly. "Finch. I had forgotten her."
Achlys looked up at him, and he added, "She's deathly afraid of Imperials. I think she thinks that just being in the presence of another of her breed is enough to create an Emperor. But what can have been important enough for Alden to come all the way out here to us?"
Achlys gestured behind her, where the Plague acolyte stood waiting for orders. "My new familiar, Ambeocyte."

Note on familiar's name: Ambeocytes, found in many invertebrates, serve a similar function to white blood cells in vertebrates. Most notably, they are the coagulant factor in horseshoe crab blood that gives it its highly desired biomedical research functions.

Day 29: Doubts

Achlys drew a long, shaky breath as she entered her cave. Her mate looked up at her as she came in for the night. "It is done."

"So?" Wenyihuo set down his harp and turned his full attention to her.

"The first...he has changed. Drastically. It was a shock to us all...He looks so much like a Lich."

"He is not," the Imperial confirmed, tilting his head.

Achlys shook her head. "He is not." She settled down next to her mate, approximately the length of his front leg. He could feel her pressing into him, hard. He waited.

Finally, "Do you think I'm doing the right thing? I feel like I'm pulling them away from Plaguebringer in service to the Tidelord."

He scooped her up and held her in his arms. "You are not doing that. Always and forever you will belong to Plaguebringer, and so will they. Learning how to best use her gifts in the depths of the Sea is not an abandonment of her ways. It is an adaptation, a mutation. They have evolved in order to survive and spread the Plague. It is a glorious expression of her philosophies."

"I just hope that the Council will see it that way," she muttered. But she allowed herself to relax into his claws, and he held her carefully until she fell asleep.
