Despite supposedly being a place to relax, The Burrowing Owl Tea Rooms has seen many a row in its lifetime. Today though, all is quiet, and so he listens to the soft conversation happening over by the window, while Tiberius busies himself in the back. 'You never told me before,' Petronella starts, 'how you ended up with him.' Her companion sighs, bright painted feathers drooping, 'It's not exactly a story I love to tell, Nell. My family was suffering from a curse that blighted our lands. Narcisson fixed it, saved our subjects, and I was a naive princess who fell in love and left with him. Clearly I didn't understand what he was back then.' Her crest drops further, 'I know now, though.' Petronella stretches out a wing to brush Hyacinta's. 'Yeah. You do - and you have me. And my family, and your kids, and even the rest of the corporation, despite the fact that they keep him around.' she chuffs a little, frill rippling 'I'm sure I saw Bittern and Mirkwood sneak something into his bag the other day.' The smallest of smirks bares Hyacinta's teeth, 'Twisting turbines, I hope it was something smelly,' her expression turns suddenly wistful 'It almost reminds me...' 'Reminds you..?' The coatl's face twists into something almost painful, 'Back home... I had a bodyguard of sorts. Her name was Magpie, we were practically raised together. Mother and Father always figured I'd need someone to look after me.' Her voice almost breaks, 'And she tried. She really did.' A quiet descends over the shop. Copernicus even, finds his claws stilling and his breath stopping, not wishing to disturb the memory which seems to have taken Hyacinta over.
Petronella breaks, 'What happened?'
A bitter laugh rips from Hyacinta's throat. 'Like I said. I was young, and naive and enamoured with the mysterious warlock who saved my kingdom from collapse.' 'Magpie knew what he was. She was good at seeing through acts - she saw through mine every day. I always felt bravest when I was around her. Maybe something to do with the 5 different weapons she had on her at all times, but...' again, a pause, 'she told me not to go with him, and I didn't listen. I asked her to come with me, and she refused. We fought. And then I left.' |

As Petronella's bright laugh tinkles out, time seems to start moving again, and Copernicus feels safe enough to go over to the couple - just to remind them that they really ought to drink their tea. Before it gets cold.
