In the center where it all begins and ends, there is an old lotus pond.

Cracked stone banks lined with creeping moss and ivy circle the eternal blooms swaying in the air. We know no seasons here, no weather, no time, and yet they drift as if dancing with the breezes of Spring and Autumn. Their gentle glow illuminates the old bronze statue staring into the pool.

It, too, has frozen, much like its timeless domain that continues to move, but only within the same space as today and tomorrow.

Tarnished wings and emerald eyes still glow dully in the weak light, a faded spirit trapped in a worn body. Should we stay long enough, we will realize that it moves between its perch in the center of the pond and the stone lamps guarding the broken bridge to the edge of the pool. Perhaps we think this is slow, but for an entity that knows no time in a plane of near perfect stillness, an eternity is to them what a second is to us.

Sometimes, those emerald eyes seem to stare out past the edge of the water, past the weak light and grey skies into the abyss beyond. Faint melodies weave through the air, gently rustling dusty feathers with their eerie sound. Among the fragrance of lotus flowers drifts a scent more wild, more earthbound, barely distinguishable before it fades. The stone lamps flicker for a moment as the bridge appears to fix itself, only to silently collapse into a pile of shards.

The statue seems to sigh.

I suppose one does get lonely in purgatory.
