Amid the splash of raindrops, you hear a soft humming from the side of the street. It seems to be coming from a sodden lump resembling a plush baby coatl. The tune reminds you of brighter times from when you were young, of sunlit mornings and special breakfasts. You make your way around a puddle or two and crouch next to the stuffie. To your surprise and delight, the small coatl turns to look at you. Her burbling song becomes more cheerful and her frost-blue eyes light up.
“Hello there, little thing, you’re all wet!” you coo. She hums back at you, mimicking your tone. You let out a small laugh and she seems pleased with herself. “Let’s get you dry, alright, darling?”
Back at your home, you do your best to dry off the baby coatl. After towelling her off, she shakes herself, sending water all over the place. Guess she thought you needed a bath, too! You carry her over to the heater to dry off the rest of the way and slide down the wall to sit next to her. “Next to” doesn’t seem quite close enough for the little darling, so she flops into your lap. She’s still damp, but so warm and snuggly that it’s hard to mind.
You recognize the song she starts to hum next - it’s an old song about a girl named Maya who heard voices. “Is that the Maya song?” you ask, as much to yourself as to the hatchling. She pauses her melody to let out an enthusiastic chirp! “Maya. That’s a nice name.” She chirps again - almost a squeak - and bumps her head against your arm. “Is that what you want me to call you?” You didn’t know coatls could purr, but that’s what Maya seemed to be doing. Before you know it, the two of you have fallen asleep in the warmth of the heater and the comfort of each other.
The little coatl takes to you immediately. She doesn’t eat or drink like another dragon would, but besides that she seems just as alive as any other you’d met. She’s always humming something, usually cheerful and jazz-like, sometimes more quiet and calming during the night hours. If she were less perfectly in tune, the new soundtrack to your life might get obnoxious, but you quickly come to enjoy her serenades and lullabies. She’s never happier than when she’s comforting you - that small smile through tears is what makes her heart sing just as brightly as her voice does. She loves snuggling up to you - in your lap, under your arm, around your neck, on top of your head, basically anywhere her soft, warm, form can fit. Her purring has become a regular occurrence now. If you scratch her just right behind the ears, she’ll sound like an earthquake in miniature. She also purrs to cheer you up - it’s hard to not be comforted by a warm, snuggly plushie humming happily on your lap.
And of all the things Maya loves, the one she loves most is you.
