1st dragon on site with this dusthide gene combo!
Rosebud cringed. This was, quite frankly, painful to watch. Embarrassing. How had dragons like this even survive? Three very clearly novice dragons were getting run out of the Scorched Forest by a herd of centaurs. The performance was almost shameful to dragonkind, but Rosebud took pity on them. (Or perhaps it was that she couldn't bear to watch any longer).

"Please. Stand aside before you get yourselves killed," she said, gliding down to the ash-covered floor, fire-light shining through her wings.

They weren't even in any kind of formation! Chaos and confusion were an immediate loss in Rosebud's book.

"You!" She commanded a limping Mirror who looked to be in marginally better condition than the rest of the sorry troop. "On my flank. I'll show you how it's done."

Rosebud had mellowed, just a little, in her years as part of the Meristema Clan. Soon after her initial tutoring, the clan leaders she had witnessed being completely clueless in the field, had strength that surpassed her own. It had annoyed her at the time, and her first instinct was to move on, to find somewhere else where her strength and strategy would be more appreciated. Although she could be brash at times, Rosebud was not a rash dragon, and would listen (perhaps somewhat begrudgingly) to argument or reason.

It was Brick who had convinced her to stay. He was an older dragon whose strength in battle had been needed in the early days of the clan, but like Rosebud, his battle prowess had been surpassed.

"A dragon has much worth," he said. "We have a whole life of varied experiences - it's not just our victories that are valuable."

He told her that her expertise could be honed in different directions, and that it would lead to a greater sense of fulfilment in the long-run by having her weeks made up of a range of tasks.

"It's nice. To have a bit of a break sometimes. Something tells me you fight tooth and claw, recover but never really rest. Being here gives you the opportunity to try. And if you're still too restless, by all means continue on your way, but know that the offer is always open."

Rosebud didn't leave. Brick had a way of speaking that she could tell came from experience, it wasn't empty words, platitudes or pleading. He was honest and true. The kind of truth that had worked bone-deep over the course of his life. She had a great respect for that and felt a kinship towards him. He had evidently been much like her once - he had old scars snaking across his scales, but he also hailed from Shadow. Perhaps that was why his eyes gave her comfort.

Brick's own role had adapted to being a bit of a punching bag for young dragons, but predominantly he was the Guardian of the Hoard. His bulk made him intimating enough but he was also expectionally cool-headed and would be wise to any sort of trickery. As the clan expanded and the hoard grew, other guards were appointed, but Brick retained the definitive title and oversaw it all.

He helped Rosebud find her own niche - a Survival Skills Trainer for the clan. She was passionate that dragons should know how to handle themselves but she broadened her teaching to how to travel safely, find shelter and make camp; which critters and terrain were especially dangerous; how to find your bearings, read a map... anything and everything she could think of that would ensure the survival of a dragon travelling Sornieth alone. There was still some combat training in there, but not as intensive as she had been used to. Her instruction delivery was still a little blunt, and she could sometimes be a hard taskmaster, but it was all coming from a foundation of care. Her pupils could see this and respected her for it.

After Fauna uncovered the Dusthides, something started to niggle at the back of Rosebud's mind. Eventually she sought out Sodalite and he worked on making the right spell for her. Ancient breeds were easier, he said. They had a powerful connection to their deities and they had been here so long that they were part of Sornieth. Dusthides were connected to the earth more than any other breed, and using the mud their new Dusthide clan members still had beneath their claws and scales, a transformation spell ceremony was crafted.

The earth from the Dusthide tunnels was mixed into a paste and Sodalite brushed stripes of it across her forehead, horns, cheekbones and along her spine. Rosebud covered all of her paws as instructed and sat in the rune circle as Sodalite spoke to the Earth beneath them, asking for the Gladekeeper's assistance in making the connection. The runes began to glow - green before pulsing into amber. Rosebud's scales began to feel shivery and her mane began to thicken.

She emerged from the cave stocky where she had been sleek, large white patterns on her body where she had been dark. The idea of possessing such core and grounded strength had intruged her and she wasn't disappointed. She took great pleasure in discovering more appropriate fighting techniques and strategies, relying less on flight and speed, leaning how to use the terrain to her advantage. Her new digging ability was especially useful for her survival classes, and locking antlers with young Roe and Baudin was energising.

She could no longer nest with Brick like she used to, but they remained close. He was proud of her - this was exactly the kind of self-discovery and fulfilment he had hoped she would experience.

@Commander said: MMMM, Rosebud sounds like a wonderful commander and I'm all for it! I'm not really into FR lore, but man, she sounds like someone my own retired soldier would want in his army - maybe. :P
