The woods grow dark long before nightfall. These things, Yaari knows well. Leaves swallow sunlight like exhausted animals down water, blossoming beneath blue skies but drowning out those beneath the canopy as the sun slips below horizons. Shadows grow, then fill, until there is naught but dark hide and wandering bright eyes.

Little dragons like Yaari are not made for the dark. But his clan has gone, has walked on, has slipped silent past the stones and valleys without him, and he knows nothing but to keep on with weak slow legs and seek hope.

Again and again the sun returns and fades as he wanders, first among trees, then cliffs, then tall hollow stalks and grassy fields before trees once again. Sorineth is vast. It's easy to forget that also can mean empty.

Once, in those lost branches, he sees— unwavering lanternlight, distant, beckoning. They offer no warmth, sources shielded by paper and glass, but they are a promise of presence. Of people. Of someone, waiting for him if he but reaches.

In the nearer distance, a howl. When Yaari flees, startled by his mind's conjured dangers, it is down paths only moonlight and shadows touch. He would never know the shape of life that left him behind, not long ago; now, he will never know the life he evaded.

He is found instead, later, by a fierce nocturne clad in glittering wings and helm, aglow in the dark light of moon and magic. The other hisses suspicions, shrewd eyes probing from behind the faceplate— but this stranger is no older than Yaari is, body built in training but hands soft in youth. And when he stands and pleads home and light, for all the wariness in the world that heaps at his feet, the guardsdragon leads on.

She lights a candle, a tiny stump of a thing with no scent and tiny smoke curls, so his faltering feet will not stumble blind over strewn roots, and passes him the holder so he knows its warmth. The night holds its own kind of safety, just like the day, and there is no need to fear it or these woods. Not anymore, with her spear to shield. Not once he knows the way.

Novalis, too, is warm to an abandoned little soul like him. The guard brings him to a guardian with wings like petals, then to a skydancer with stones like skin, and half a dozen other faces that Yaari can't hope to keep straight at first. They give him shelter without question, food and water without hesitation. When nightmares of the creeping dark's denizens come there are those who will protect him, both in heart and body. Parents, aunts, uncles, a sibling: they raise him up like his first clan never did, in teasing words and unyielding support, and he flourishes.

Yaari is soft to Alloki's steel, quiet to Liriel's booming and nervous to Caerwyn's curiosity. But he loves the curl of wax smoke, the flickers of sparks and little flames that did not banish the night but made him able to see the road, just long enough to find his way. So he molds it to new shapes, candles and lanterns and little braziers to hold. Novalis will always know warmth and light, he promises— and those who wander will too, for as long as his wicks hold sun.
