Biography

- Makes inks, paints, watercolours and pigments. Is where Polaris gets her assortment of blue inks from, where Kaze gets most of his inks from, and Equinox gets his paints from.
- Is really good at colour schemes and has a good sense of how things should go together, but cannot draw and/or paint to save her life.

Polaris,

The Engineering Department is attempting to come up with a pen that works in any environment, including underwater and low-gravity departments, and is compatible with standard ink refills. I have been attempting to convince Ahephyx that a pencil is not sufficient, please help me explain to her how graphite can get into dragons' eyes and how that's a major safety hazard.

Dear Polaris,

The Alchemy Department is attempting to beat the Engineering Department at their own game by coming up with a pen that can:
- Write with any ink you wish it to (or rather, the ink within is the product of alchemy (and comes with specific runes that convert it into the desired ink).
- The ink in question will also never run out, and can be used underwater.

Do you have any advice on the different types of nibs that fountain pens come in?

Oh, and please slow the Engineering Department down by giving them barely-useless advice.

Regards,
Archmage Rubedo Chrysopoeia

Dear Polaris,

The Semiotics (Runes) sub-Department is attempting to come up with a rune-engraved pen that can do the following:
- Turn into a rapier,
- Act as a glorified throwing dart,
- Teleport back to one's pocket if too far away,
- Upon command, magically animate and write on any solid surface within 30 feet without the use of one's claws, and/or carve / engrave / emboss / deboss text or symbols on wood, stone, metal, and other similar surfaces,
- Be instructed to copy any book, spell, scroll, or other document,
- However, as the pen relies on ink refills, the user still may need to supply the parchment, any special inks needed, and fulfil any other requirements as if they were the scribe, though fortunately the most promising rune array can let it reduce the time of transcription by half.
- In rapier form, the feather-shaped guard of the rapier appears metallic beige under ordinary light and sangria purple in the presence of strong magic; in pen form, this is true for the cap. (The colours were chosen by a Disciple and we voted that it was far too good to pass up.)
- Per Phorcys' request, the pen can also function underwater.

The reason for the first function is to provide a weapon if attacked, and that the entire idea was that the sword could be as mighty as the pen if it was the pen (I blame Pācai).

Other benefits of having the Proseweaver (name TBC) include: always having a pen on hand, always having a makeshift dart on hand, and being able to declare that you're a terrible weaver of poetry but a good weaver of prose.

Do you know anyone who makes good quality ink in bulk?

Why are so many departments writing to me about inventing pens???? I'm not an expert in design and technology!

Also, don't use pencils; they're eye hazards.

1) You're famous for using fountain pens and your signature ink to write most of your letters.
2) I came up with a pen-inventing competition to occupy the Archmages' (and their Aethers') time as a team-bonding exercise. It's been quite productive so far, though it might have ignited a competitive spark between the Departments. Also, something useful might actually come out of it.
3) I know about graphite being a hazard, I was pulling Weber's leg.
4) The Elementalism Department is judging the quality of each pen. Ostensibly. In reality, Skiron agreed to look at the drafts and/or prototypes each come up with and compile the best ideas. If you wish, you can get a free copy of the new pen, or we could give them out as Founders' Day gifts.
