Artwork and Extra

When a horned magi is corrupted by the magic of the Deep, they become a dark, clawed monster that hunts anything in sight. They cannot leave the dark, as it harms them, and they corrupt their land as they live. These creatures are hated and feared by all the races, but they have become their own. A select few had left their savage ways, and in turn, created their own civilization. They called themselves Sanguine. They still could not bear the light, and so they stuck to their forests and practiced a dark magic. This magic caused infinite darkness in their forest, so the sun could not pierce the veil of thick fog to harm the Sanguine. An uproar was caused in a nearby village of Humans. They feared this power that had overtaken the forest, and sent specialists to destroy whatever mages lied within. The assault had failed many times, but many of the Sanguine had been lost. They feared the Humans, and just wanted to be left alone.

One day an assassin had entered the forest, seeking refuge from the guard, and a place to rest. The forest was not ideal for most, but it served her needs perfectly, and so she stopped in them. While setting up her camp in an abandoned animal hole she discovered a tall, pale, and clawed creature, standing over her with hair as dark as a raven's wings. She was terrified, and tried to flee, but the Sanguine that had discovered her was too quick. He pinned her to the ground and stared into her eyes as she struggled. The sound of a guard patrol was heard, nearing the two of them. The Sanguine closed his eyes for a moment, trying to decide the fate of the girl. But as he opened his eyes to decide her fate, he noticed she had stopped fighting him. She looked like she wanted to hide, but he did not understand why a Human would want to hide from their own kind. In an instant he swooped the assassin up, and swiftly dove into a nearby hollow. The assassin cried out slightly as it happened, but immediately pressed her head into the Sanguine's chest.

The hollow was much deeper than the Assassin had expected, and it was decorated with dim lantern bugs, and soft moss covered stone seats. A shelf carved directly out of the tree it sat in stood out above a carefully carved stone mesa. The shelf was lined with mushrooms, various herbs, and containers of liquid. The Sanguine set the assassin down on one of the larger moss covered stone slabs, and watched her squint into the darkness. She seemed to be amazed by the hidden home, and more comfortable than she had been outside. The Sanguine stepped up to her and asked why she was in the forest. She seemed surprised by his words at first, but then answered that she had been running from the guard. The Sanguine was confused, and curious as to why a Human would flee from their own kin. She told him that she had never been accepted by her people, when left without parents, she had been ignored and forgotten. She resented her people for casting her out because of the decision she made to practice magic, and that the guard had caused her some trouble. The two of them seemed to connect, and the Sanguine told her that his people had forgotten him too. The guard made many more patrols nearby, and the assassin stayed with the Sanguine in order to remain safe.

Eventually, the assassin found she didn't want to leave. She begged the Sanguine to let her stay, and he accepted. He had felt alone for so long, he had forgotten how much he wanted someone to accept him. Despite the danger, the two stayed together in the woods, and they had fallen in love. One day the assassin had a small child, but to both of their surprise, it looked nothing like either of them. It was a girl, with a purple and blue fur growing over a speckled blue skin. She had large animal-like ears, a long tail, fanged teeth, clawed hands and feet, and bright purple eyes. The Sanguine feared for the child, claiming that it was born of the Deep. The very same magic that condemned his race, and changed his body. But eventually these fears lessened. He would accept this child, even if nobody else would. He would not turn her away for the same reasons he was abandoned. They would become a family of outcasts, and they would stick together. Eventually more of these strange animal-like creatures would appear, and their species would be called "the Fallen." The product of a corrupted elf, and a mage-born human, all Fallen had an innate capacity for magic. And they would face their own struggles in turn, but perhaps they could be the bridge to reconnect the severed ties that the Sanguine faced. Only time would tell such a tale.
