17 March 2016 - 14 November 2021

On the morning of the 14th of November, we found Loki screaming in pain and yowling like a demon on steroids. It took us a few hours but we were finally able to get him to an ER where it was revealed he had a bad urinary blockage. Loki's life had already been hell up to this point, starting with an umbilical hernia, a broken tail and foot, and being abandoned; followed by fleas, a massive and horrible case of worms that needed three doses of canine strength meds before they cleared up, straight into giardia. Then constant urinary tract issues, but they had always cleared up on their own after a couple of days.

We knew a blockage was GOING to happen with him, it was inevitable... but we thought it wouldn't be for another few years, and the fact that he was basically 99.999999% guaranteed to have AT LEAST one repeat, his quality of life went from 80% to around 10-20%. Urinary blockages are technically treatable, but with a heavy heart and a lot of tears, we decided it would be better for him if we euthanized him. We truly feel it's selfish and cruel to subject him to this kind of misery repeatedly (not just the pain of it all, but the car travel, the 48 hours away from us every time, on top of all the needles, strangers, procedures, and surgeries), there was no way we could, in good conscience, put him through that.

Loki went in my arms, purring as much as he could manage. I was told I could spend as much time as I wanted with him before, and after, he went, but I couldn't bear to prolong his pain when every few breaths or subtle movement resulted in him screaming and crying. I spent a long time after, though, holding him, apologizing to him, kissing his head and telling him we loved him and he was the best boy!

His clay pawprint(s) will be on the tree this year, with Orik's,
and we will have his urn displayed lovingly with his collar and tag.

Pictures of this will be added when we have them

He loved us unconditionally. I have never seen a cat love as openly and blindly as Loki did. He never lashed out, he never hurt anyone, not even those who hurt him. He always forgave, and he always offered up lots of cuddles and purrs. He didn't deserve the hand he was dealt! He deserved everything good that the world had to offer! I hope he felt and knew our love! Most of all, I hope that he knows we made this decision out of love, kindness, compassion, and empathy and that he will be greatly missed.

He was a weird cat... he didn't hold grudges, he ate plastic, he couldn't figure out a simple treat ball, he was obsessed with food but it could only magically come from us, not some ball. He was obsessed with the toilet bowl, he would run into things, he would remove himself from unpleasant situations, like a pulled tail, only to come back for love three seconds later, and he was a big mouthy baby.

I genuinely think he wasn't actually supposed to be a cat...
...more like a great dane trapped in a cat's body.

Truly, the goodest of boys!
