Biography

"...for the vault is forever."

Palok
Keeper of the Vault

Wind-Up Key
Blackfire Chest
Palok selected her charge young. She delights in being both jeweler and banker, assessing every gemstone she guards and assaying every coin. Despite Bryferth's mercurial economic policy, she does her best to grimly hang on to the clan's savings, believing that the larger the package, the better.

Well trusted by all in the clan, Palok guards the jewelry and savings of most clan members, except Zayathinae, who contracts his own private guard and keeps his financials well separated from the prying claws of Bryferth.

"And you want how many gems?" Palok said, primly removing her jewelers' loupe and placing it in the black marble counter before her.

"Two thousand," Kilararen replied, maintaining direct eye contact.

"For what purpose?" Palok spluttered, outraged. She placed both hands on the counter. "You cannot make this kind of withdrawal on such short notice, when I haven't even finished cataloguing the new gems--!"

Kilararen inhaled and exhaled deliberately. "I have deemed it necessary for the continuation of the public mosaics, and so many of the geology vendors with the correct semiprecious stones accept only gems."

Palok started at the mention of mosaics. "I see. This is one of Hadasonine's designs, isn't it. Yes, that drake has had designs indeed, designs to access the vault!" She pushed away from the counter, trailing ribbon and flame.

"The outrage!" she muttered, and continued grumbling to herself as she strode into the back hallway.

Kilararen followed. "How much is left?" she asked, attempting delicacy.

Palok did not pause, sweeping into the darkened vault chamber proper. "Goodness knows, with how much you sold that mushroom abomination Glwysed found for.” She selected a key from beneath her cloak and unlocked a small black case, brushing a claw over the array of cool white jewels within.

She turned. “With this gone, there are one hundred and three gems.” She presented the case to Kilararen. “And the treasure store, of course.”

Kilararen accepted the case, tucking it under her own regalia. “Thank you, Palok.”

Palok breezed past her without comment.

“I know this is a difficult time for you, with all these little withdrawals. And large ones.” Kilararen followed Palok into the hallway back. “And I do sympathize, I’ve had a hard enough time relinquishing the recruits, with the war on…”

Palok returned to the counter, tail lashing.

At the counter gate, Kilararen paused. "I'll have more gems, from the merchants' taxes. They'll be in before the week is up."

"Very well." Palok arranged herself behind the counter, and watched Kilararen walk across the vault hall laden with the case of gems.

She sighed to herself, and idly flicked the golden weigh scale hanging from the wrought iron gate that shielded the vault proper from the hall. There was nothing for it, she supposed. Kilararen's philosophy was firmly set on the importance of appearance, and inheritances. She was big on inheritances. Although not monetary ones, obviously. Just passing down big, permanent works of art to one's descendants.

Palok turned and pulled the latest gem ledger off the back counter, and began writing in this withdrawal, just below the credit entry for Glwysed's mutated mushroom.

There would be more gems, she knew. Even if Kilararen had to beat them out of the merchants with a stick, there would be more gems.
