Biography

SURGE

Uh-oh, looks like this somewhat stupid ridgeback wandered a little too far from their home lair (452562, Hyzenthlaay), and now they’re off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt them, we'd really appreciate it if you instead could just return them to their original home via the Crossroads, send them off in the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread (warning, you will get another traveler in return if you do this), or if you don’t want another traveler in return, this rest hub. You can also adopt them permanently if you don’t want them leaving your lair - just contact Hyzenthlaay and let her know (it’s good for her notes)!

Many people have worked very hard on this traveling dragon, and exalting them would be an absolute shame. Please don’t do it!

Surge is shockingly electricity-resistant for a winged creature, and thus, he has taken it upon himself to nibble on every loose cord known to Sornieth in hope for a buzz - literally. He gets a little dizzy-headed when electricity courses through his veins, and instead of taking this as a sign that he, perhaps, should not be putting his mouth on the live wires, he sees it as his life's work to push his electric-hoarding limits. This can't end well... Maybe your clan should keep an eye on him for the time being? Just keep him away from plugs. Or not. That's your call.

Unsurprisingly, Surge has been banned from several Lightning clans, mostly for ruining their infrastructure. He's not well received in other elemental clans either, to be fair.

When Surge arrived at Saibhreas, he knew there was plenty of electricity for him to consume. It was a larger clan, surviving by trading goods and services with all of Sornieth, and by training young dragons to serve the Stormcatcher at the Saibhreas Battle Academy. Thus, there were plenty of electric lines and generators throughout the city, as well as a few inventors with automatons powered by strong batteries. All very dangerous for the average dragon, but not for Surge!

He also encountered a lovely tundra by the name of Robo -- she was quite advanced in age, but she was also plenty elegant and mysterious. He had a hatchling with her, named Sprocket, whom she wanted to train at the Battle Academy. Surge was thankful, since he got into so much trouble on his journeys that keeping a hatchling with him would prove dangerous. With that settled, he moved on.

Surge at first landed confidently in Clan Duneberry's forest clearing. The name was so inviting, a unique berry chock full of that sweet surging electricity! But, things weren't quite what he envisioned in his perfect reality...
This clan was not very... electrically attuned, to say the least. In fact, they seemed to almost worship access to electricity. Wherever Surge looked, there was nothing but trees and vines. No wires, no sources of power, no access to any sort of central grid for thousands of miles... absolutely nothing.

Lightning-aligned dragons were worshiped in the clan as prophetic masters. What a unique culture they had here... the charged duneberry was very special to them. In the center of the clan's main clearing, the sole berry was displayed under magic protections. It was so tantalizingly close, Surge could practically taste the energizing electric buzz as he stared at it. The clan saw huge thunderstorms as times of celebration, when the berry is fully charged. Although they did treat him well, giving him any sort of mechanical doodad they could scrounge up; steam power was simply not the same as electric. If that duneberry was the only sort of electricity around, he might just have to do something drastic to get it...

"It's too bad Surge is a bit of a dim bulb, isn't it? Maybe that's why he's always craving the stuff in the first place..."

Surge ran afoul of Diode when he tried to snap at the sparks floating around her. It was the first time he'd seen a fae that offended. She and her wildclaw companion led him to the place the colony rested, muttering something about keeping stragglers alive. Surge was greeted by Warkar, a serious skydancer who hosted travelers. Surge... found himself far larger than nearly all of the clan, save for the gaolers who carried the fae and veilspun in their horns. He had a hard time spotting the tiny dragons, and was sent politely but firmly on his way as the colony traveled near the edge of the Shifting Expanse.

——————————————————————————

The Skyward Sun Temple is an ancient stronghold, older than the modern dragon nation it is now a part of, and as such... has no electricity. None, zip, zero. Surge hadn’t experienced withdrawal like this in years. The complex was also very far from any of the larger Light settlements, making electricity pretty much inaccessible. The residents of the complex were friendly enough, even as the Ridgeback became increasingly nervous and irritable, lacking the “buzz” that kept him in a state of loveable, himbo-like doofiness. The near-lack of other Ridgebacks had Surge hanging around with the Gaolers out back.
“You alright mate? You’re not lookin’ well.” It was Kaialan, a deep gray fellow with a major Snowsquall accent. Surge bit back a snarl as he got close.
“No electricity. Means no more mister nice guy.” Surge hadn’t sobered up in a long time. Kaialan just nodded like this was an everyday thing.
“I get it. Met more’n a few Lightnin’ dragons in my day. Very few can work those hours without... chemical assistance. Though your case seems a little more severe.” The furry dragon set himself down next to Surge. “Why don’t you tell me all about your habit? Maybe it’ll help.” Surge glared at him.
“You better not be trying to make me quit.”
“Your life, mate. Just tryin’ to be friendly.” Surge sighed. Maybe talking would make him feel better.
“I’m not from the Expanse. I’m from Earth territory, the wastes. The ground there can crack right open without warning. And sometimes, it does the opposite.”
“You mean...” Kaialan looked horrified.
“The ground swallowed my whole team. My family. After that... well, I couldn’t stay the happy-go-lucky dragon others wanted without help.” Surge fixed his deep brown eyes on the Gaoler’s purple ones. “That’s the story.” Kaialan trembled a little.
“Mate, that’s awful.”
“You don’t know the half of it.”

After Surge's time at the Skyward Sun Temple, he decided that maybe it would be a good idea to head back to the Earthshaker's domain. He thought he could just travel out of his way to make sure he didn't encounter his home clan, but while at a bazaar he spotted some dragons from Clan Mavenlark and booked it.
Instead of sticking to civilized areas, he decided to check out this tunnel system adventurers were raving about; Cragenmire Cavern. Rumor was that some dragons have been hatched inside, and were trying to make the caves livable for others. Intrigued, Surge headed over to the nearest entrance, finding an excavation team working to make the entrance large enough for all dragons to enter and putting up support beams to ensure there'd be no cave-ins.
What caught Surge's eye was the bundle of electric lantern lights they were hanging up along the walls. Before he could bite into the wires, he was stopped by a strange imperial named Ailron, who asked him to be his audience for a magic show routine he'd been practicing. Ailron's skills as a magician completely distracted Surge from the thought of electricity coursing through his body - of course, unless he directly thought about it - and he was kept entertained until well after dark.
Now friends, Surge decided to spend the night with Ailron and his mate, Sycra. One night turned into many, and Surge found himself enjoying the Cragenmire dragons more and more. He ended up taking a liking to a fellow traveler, a mirror named Ant.
The two flirted so fiercely, it was no surprise they decided to have some hatchlings along the way. In the end, though, only their daughter Genera made it, with the magical stones embedded all along the cave walls changing her genes until she no longer resembled her parents. Genera seemed to be right at home in the unexplored depths of Cragenmire Cavern, so Surge and Ant both agreed that it'd be best to leave her there. As Surge packed up to leave, he realized he hadn't consumed any electricity the whole trip. Maybe he'd have to come back some other time, see how Genera was doing. Until then, he'd wander once more.

When he eventually collapsed from exhaustion after wandering for a long time (each time you ask, he changes the time; weeks, months, sometimes he'll say a year. Honestly he probably forgot or wasn't keeping track of time then), he was on the border of a clan in Shadow. When their battle trainer was scouting out the area, she found him snoring, half in and half out of a murky bog in a slowly sinking clearing of the forest. Knowing he'd probably sink into the mud if she left him here, she managed to drag him back, where he came to and explained what he was doing. When he was talking with a few dragons from the clan, the dragon who'd saved him stayed in the corner and watched him silently. She was a tall skydancer with a long, flexible tail, and her eyes were cyan. The color of lightning. He took an instant liking to her and on several occasions after tried to flirt with her unsuccessfully. She had no interest in him and his gawkiness or his idiotic chaos of a brain, so eventually he let it go.
The clan, known as The Amethyst Clan he learned, often took in traveling dragons and were perfectly cool with the idea of him staying a few days.
He was slightly disappointed here and a little depressed. Everything was so gloomy-looking and, of course, there were no wires to chew. It was for his own good, but he didn't know that, and so as soon as he could he made plans to leave this strange place.

After some time, Surge has once again found himself heading into Nature’s domain. He stumbled on a spiral in a forest near the Pox Consulate - quite literally, almost stepped on him. The spiral, who introduced himself as Radiant, turned out to be an alchemist’s assistant, looking for specific plants they have run out of. The ridgeback felt guilty for scaring him and decided to help him in his search.

They wandered for a while, more interested in chatting than in the task at hand. Surge shared stories of all the places he’s been to, and Radiant gossiped about his friends. By the time they abandoned their search and headed back to Radiant’s clan, the spiral was wrapped around Surge’s neck like a fancy iridescent scarf. It took Surge a while to realize that he's being flirted with.

The two of them haven't left each other's sight for weeks. Surge felt the need to keep going, motivated by the lack of electricity in these woods, but was reluctant to leave. He even contemplated asking Radiant to leave with him when Surge inevitably had to continue his journey. But they couldn't take all their hatchlings with them. With a heavy heart, he had to leave on his own.
