It began as the Ancients arose.

A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality.

After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory.

Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real.

A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet.

They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own.

Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it.

The question now is… will they?

In the wood outside the ancient tower the clan inhabits lives a witch. She dwells in her cottage alone except for her familiar, and she likes it that way. Quies works her delicate magic to weave a web all across the area, warding off the nightmares, but recently, a tiny hole was torn in the filigree net. This tiny hole tore open at the same time the very first clutch of eggs in the lair hatched, and Quies was certain that Manus, with his magic-touched eyes, was the cause. Unfortunately, Quies was not a part of the clan. She considered herself a close neighbor, but never a friend. Her cottage was well hidden, and though she occasionally stopped by the tower to take advantage of their extensive library, Floraceth and Ardast never knew where she came from or where she went.

Weeks later, Evenyl, from a family of wandering herbalists, joined the clan. Accidentally, Evenyl and Quies began to develop a friendship. They shared the best places to pick the best herbs with each other, and worked together in silence to create their elixirs and ointments. Evenyl told Quies all about the other dragons of the clan, and eventually, Evenyl was successful in convincing Quies to come and have dinner with the rest of the clan. Quies and Manus made eye contact, and suddenly Quies knew. A spirit had invaded his dreams.

With the help of Evenyl, Quies worked her way towards becoming a more active member of the clan, and Alidade and Evenyl took their time to help her become used to being part of a team.

Since her newfound deeper connection to the clan, Quies has been working harder than ever to reweave her spell and purge Vesperine from Manus' dreams, but Vesperine is wily. No matter how many times Quies reweaves and respins her golden dreamthread net, Vesperine finds a tiny crack to slide through. Most recently, Vesperine has begun to appear in Quies' dreams as well.

In a classic bout of typical Quies introvertedness, she has not yet told Evenyl or Alidade of her unsettling dreams, for how could they understand? How could they know that since her birth, Quies has dedicated her entire life to preserving the good dreams of others?

Every night, Quies sleeps less and less. Vesperine has grown more and more corporeal, and now she even tales a dragon shape. With so much energy exerted to protect the clan, Quies has no experience protecting herself. Always, Vesperine is in the periphery of Quies' vision, shuffling her deck and chuckling quietly.

There is nobody left for Quies to confide in but her familiar, Mollitrix, and together they have been training to take a spiritual form and fight back against Vesperine, but as of yet they cannot maintain their spirit form for more than a few hours.
