Imposing and seemingly untouchable, Maria the High Priestess holds the city of Kjalla in the palm of her hand. When outside her domain, the Temple of the Lightweaver, she wreaths herself in magical, dark smoke, purportedly to protect the publics' eyes from the blinding glow of the Lightweaver's blessing surrounding her. Maria has no patience for the meddling of outsiders in the gilded city's affairs, and though she appears to be the picture of deference to the new steward Maur Redtail during court, she has many of her own ears to whisper into and strings to pull behind the scenes if she so chooses.

Maria shares her duties at the temple with her mate, the priest Virgil. While the latter is frequently out liaising with the public, Maria attends to worshipers who visit the temple, and ensures that its grounds and idols remain pure and sanctified.

"The allegiance of the priest lies with no queen, king, or steward, but rather with her city. She alone is responsible for ensuring its people keep the faith, and the faith is essential for maintaining social cohesion. Kings are slain, councils come undone, and the law fails. The Lightweaver, however, has kept watch for all the ages of Kjallan history, and will do so for all those to come; a beacon of stability for the flighty masses."

"How best, then, to remind the people of their radiant guardian? Statues, murals, and texts have their place, but they alone cannot produce a sufficiently visceral display of divinity. This is the principal duty of the priest; to embody divinity - to let the people witness it, alive and in the flesh, before their very eyes. It is a lonely task, admittedly, with no room for friends or associates among the common folk. The priest must be ever apart, always suspended between mortality and godliness."
