Darling came to the lair when he was just a day old. An elderly Guardian was with him, not as a Guardian, but simply as a protector. Precious was an average hatchling, and an average dragon. He'd turned down the offer to join the Order of Beauty, and he hadn't taken a mate.
Until one day, he met his fate in the Sunbeam Ruins…
Everyone agreed that Darlings mother was a bit strange. She was intent on having a child with multiple eyes, and she would not accept any child without this mutation.
Darling was such a child. His given name was FAILURE. He always hated it. And he surely would have been exalted, if not for Firestorm. The elderly mercenary decided to leave his birth clan just after he was born, and decided to take him with him. He taught him a lot during their travels; how to defend himself, how to recognise a dud coin, who not to mess with. But it wasn't a life FAILURE wanted to lead forever.
Firestorm left him with a Light clan he knew from his travels. The clan leader, Cuttle, was kind and fair; he said. They will take you in, and you can be anything you want to be; he said.
He changed his name. He changed his outfit. He tried to leave his past behind.
The Order trained him; they could always use desperate dragons with no backstory. He learned about machines and about people. The people always interested him more.
After a few years, Darling had made sure that everything about him was a weapon. His charisma is like sticky honey, slowing you down and clouding your senses. He's dressed to kill, literally and figuratively; he draws others in and spits them out once he was done with them.
When he met Precious, on the run and hiding from the might of Arcane, he found her quite fascinating. She was careful with herself, careful who to trust, and he wanted to find out what it would take to make her trust him.
Management decided that she'd get at least two of the Orders and two of Techs, and Darling convinced Sky to assign him to it. He and Lab would be handling the 'people' side of the project; asking around, gathering intel.
When he came back from a mission to Arcane, Darling found that another Pearlcatcher had apparently caught Precious' eye.

I feel a little Rick Rolled about that promised story in his bio though ;p I’m guessing that his eventual story will go in this thread, I’m blind, or maaaybe you linked the wrong thing? Leaning more toward the first guess. I’d love to see that story when it’s available though!
Also I love that quote up top about looking presentable and pretending war is a party lol, really says a lot about the character (in case we missed that bit of character condensed in the name Darling and his robed fancy attired ;D )
