Liebling was still a young dragon when he heared about the exalted Coatl who escaped. He wasn't really interested in it. He wouldn't be exalted for a long time; his clan needed more mages, and he had enough magic for the job. Liebling was raised on summoning circles and eldritch chants. His pearl started shining in the color of Arcane, humming with power. He visited the Forbiden Portal more often than he could count, making notes on the aliens' behaviour and tactics, studying the ones who died in battle and those the dragons managed to catch.
It would be wrong to say other dragons were in awe of him. Arcane dragons aren't awed by much, except maybe power, knowledge, power and eldritch monsters. But only the powerful ones.
He was overjoyed when he heared that the island he lived on was going to be turned into an experimental site - the last time this had happened, the Portal was forged!
All of his team worked tireless for months, for the new knowledge, for the glory of the Arcanists. Looking back, it seems so bitter and worthless, whatever it was.
He got knocked out in the explosion. He was told later that one of the younger dragons - an Imperial called Wisteron living near the site had carried him out before the leakage killed him, but enough damage had been done.
When he woke up, the world around him seemed fractured, as if he was looking at it from multiple angles. Turned out he was. A pair of wings unfurled next to his own, seemingly of their own will. He stared at them in horror, willing them to just go away. And then, it really hit him.
It took a long time before he stopped weeping. It was the last time he ever cried.
He learned how to cope. He learned how to fly. He didn't dare report back to Arcane HQ. Better if they think him dead. Better than to be slowly taken apart, like a butterfly pinned on cork.
He thanked the Imperial and the Spiral healer who saved him. He told them of the Coatl he'd heard about, who left with all the knowledge of Arcane in her head.
And they set out to find her.
Was it luck or coincidence, that they started looking in Light first? That they chose this clan of all clans as Headquarters from which to operate? Mangan quickly fell in love with the clan, and since it didn't have any other healer at this point, he probably would have stayed there anyway. Liebling was quite taken with the Tech dragons himself, doing what they could with the supplies they got in Light. Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Optics. Simple, compared to what he was used to, yet much more challenging than he could've imagined before.

Liebling, god of knowledge, magic, and not giving a single heck about anything. Truly the best god.
