Alethkar is one of the clan's leaders, although he rarely actually does any leadership tasks. He spends most of his time attempting to make potions that may or may not work and listening to Vannan talk about his next big idea. He rarely leaves the camp because other dragons bring things for him. Despite his leadership role in the clan, he is more of a follower and prefers to let Vannan make decisions.

Alethkar comes from the same town as Vannan, Mokkan, and Hollow. He only ever dreamed about leaving, but likely never would have attempted it if Vannan had not been so determined to leave. While he was afraid of being caught, Alethkar knew that Vannan would never leave him behind but would be unhappy if he stayed in the town forever. He agreed to escape, and later even when he thought they were both going to die out in the empty deserts of the Shifting Expanse, he found he didn't regret it.
