Biography

galatea caito
she/her | bisexual | craftsdragon | sculptor-in-training
wDCLQYA.png
|| Background
Galatea was hatched and raised on the Mirrorlight Promenade, by a pair that included a mercenary and a historian. Neither of her parents were very attentive, leaving Galatea and her nestmates to play wherever they wished— and play they did, chasing each other between pillars and ancient ruins. Well, her nestmates played with each other. Galatea often found herself staring endlessly at the beautiful statues on display in the Promenade, and attempting to replicate them with her claws and sandstone when she got home. Her childhood nest quickly filled up with miniatures as she honed her blossoming skills.

With her life passion found, Galatea was more than eager to pursue it to the end, and left her home clan with well-wishes from her siblings and a goal in mind: find someone who could teach her how to really be a sculptor. To that end, she traveled to Lanternlea Port, but found only disappointment there. There were few sculptors willing to take on an apprentice there, and more importantly, the Bounty of the Elements had recently revived Luminax. Lanternlea Port was more concerned with cataloguing the new historical finds and sheltering refugees than accomodating an aspiring sculptor, and Galatea found herself an unfulfilling job working as a barmaid to keep her head above water.

It was during her stint as a barmaid that Galatea discovered the art of a famous Spiral named Oceana, who had stayed at the tavern during her traveling days and had gifted it an amazing carved-and-painted mural. She asked after the artist's whereabouts and found out that Oceana had settled in Rara Avis, a mining clan from the Starfall Isles that produced magical gemstones. It didn't take much else to persuade Galatea to go. She had found no luck in the Sunbeam Ruins of her youth, and thusly the young artist booked a ticket on the next airship to Arcane lands.

Galatea's letter of request arrived only a few days before she did, but much to everyone's surprise, Oceana welcomed her with open wings and immediately accepted her as her apprentice. She was given board at The Golden Rose, and happily began her training— only to find that her new teacher wasn't much for schedules or even hands-on tutorage.

|| Current
Though not unhappy living in Rara Avis, Galatea has found herself somewhat... wanting. At least she doesn't have to worry about money as Oceana's apprentice, and has ample time to practice her work. Some dragons are even interested in buying her sculptures, which makes her happy to no end, but still, she's disappointed with her education in the topic.

A shy type, Galatea now spends most of her time practicing and helping out in her new home clan wherever she can. She runs barmaid at The Golden Rose during nights, helping Halindor give out food and drinks, and though it's still not great at least her past job can help her here. Plus, she's given food and board for it. Every so often, an actual sculptor will breeze through Rara Avis, and Galatea— no longer motivated by desperation— is normally too timid to go up to them and ask questions.

Still, she could be far worse off, and she knows it. Mostly, Galatea wishes she could have the courage to ask for more— but her mentor intimidates her, even when she's not trying. And besides, her skills have been improving... even if sometimes they move around more often than a statue should.

|| Notes
◈ Pygmalion was in fact carved by her, and is always kept hidden in her personal den. She did not intend for the statue to move when she crafted it, and got scared when it did, but it is her current largest and most impressive work, and she doesn't have the heart to destroy it.
◈ Galatea's sculptures only started moving when she moved to Rara Avis. She is extremely unskilled in magic and has barely any idea how it works.
◈ Galatea is in her very early twenties.
◈ Though they no longer live together, Galatea communicates frequently with her nestmates, both of whom live in Firefly Landing. She intends to visit them for a vacation someday, but hasn't figured out when yet.
◈ Whispers of Galatea having a sweetheart in another Flight are fairly common— especially when one notices the dried bundles of flowers that come in the mail for her every month. The identity of this dragon remains unknown to all but Galatea and the Messengers' Guild.
◈ Every so often, Galatea's older brother, Henry, will visit her in Rara Avis. As they were not nestmates, they did not know each other growing up, but were introduced through Firefly Landing and have since fostered a friendly relationship with each other.
