It began as the Ancients arose.

A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality.

After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory.

Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real.

A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet.

They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own.

Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it.

The question now is… will they?

Backstory
The Tangled Wood was such an awful nightmareish place that Rem was certain that dragons didn't have any comforting dreams in there. He always felt like it was his destiny to be their hero and be worshipped as a saint by the less fortunate, shadow dragons. They didn't even know how bad their life was, what a sad existance. When he arrived at the dark gloomy forest though, he realised that hallusinations, illusions and lies were so integrated into the residents culture, that robbing them of their tricks would be cruel and unfair. Rem had to change his plans. Instead of forcing his ideals on the tricksters, he decided he'd offer his sweet dreams only upon request and that with a price, so the game-obsessed shadow dragons would feel at ease since the price was upfront. No tricks. No games. Just a simple exchange of goods.

Despite Rem's best efforts though, it was really hard to convince anyone to buy his services. Not only was he from the opposing Sunbeam Ruins, but he was also offering something that the shadow dragons believed to be useless. Sweet dreams? Who needs them? Not to mention he was sometimes suspected of being a spy. Then he would get chased, captured or toyed with by the tricksters, magicians, cults or whatever nightmareish creation Shadowbinder has managed to fill her realm with. Rem liked the woods less and less as time went by.

Eventually, he made it to Murkbarrow Close and he felt like he understood the shadow dragons a bit more. It had a certain charm to it. Quiet but threatening, like the feeling of being watched, with its tightly packed together houses and its poorly lit roads, the city really was a rogue's heaven just like the rumours said. Rem felt drawn to the city immediately. It was nothing like he had ever seen before, mysterious yet dangerous. Unlike the wild woods outside of it, Murkbarrow Close felt like real civilisation and a civilisation he was eager to study. What could he say? He was coming from Sunbeam Ruins after all.

Dream Theater
The Dream Theater is popular, not only because of its excelent artists but also due to its charismatic owner. Some dragons call him arrogant, even snobbish if they're feeling bold, but his confidence is justified. His magic is unparalleled, not only as an illusionist but also as a new type of magic that most shadow dragons have never seen before. It's warm. It's soft. A feeling not often found in the cold uncunny woods that they call home.

There's another reason that the theater is so popular though. Nightmare Bazaar has set shop right outside the city's entrance and its owner is hunting down and eating dreams. Rem's magic is the only counter measure to the Nightmare's reign of terror. Dragons from Murkbarrow Close and Foxfire Bramble stamble into the theater, looking for protection, hoping for an end to their sleepless nights and hallucinations. Rem always feels very proud to be helping them out, fulfilling his original goal in a way, even though he knows it's not exactly what he wanted back then. He's never met the Nightmare in person. But he really hates Nightmare Bazaar.

Lately the circus troops have started attacking his theater straight away and stealing his customers. Maybe it's about time he has a word with this mysterious Nightmare.
