Emerald

One of the older members of Leaf's clan, Emerald is Leaf's closest friend and partner, and often joins her in defending their territories and seeking out new alchemy ingredients. She enjoys spending time relaxing in the tree-tops and watching Boomslang get buried in overenthusiastic hatchlings. Emerald led a peaceful life in the clan of her younger years, but without a single passion or craft, often felt as though she was missing something, or not living up to the 'Imperial standards' so many of her kind take pride in. She took mates, and loved and cared for her children, but after they were grown, she decided to look for a new place to belong.

In meeting Leaf, Emerald found a kindred spirit in her struggles between the expectations for her species and her own visions for the future. Together, Emerald hopes they can build a clan where hatchlings do not feel they have to choose between the expectations of their family and society, and the ability to be true to themselves. However, in building their family, Emerald has also been forced to confront her own biases-she cares for Athena and takes pride as Leaf does in her achievements-but her initial uncomfortable reaction to a Pearl-catcher sharing her lair haunts her with the thought that she may still have something in common with those who judged her in the past- and she worries her difficulties with overcoming old biases will affect Leaf's developing bond with Athena.
