➔ before seeds of doubt were planted

• Everyone comes and goes it seems, even divine beings. People change. “I don’t think I’ll ever change, I don’t think I can follow my friend into the great unknown.” They didn’t have many beliefs but they knew that. There’s something special about those who leave, and they didn’t possess those qualities. Others aren’t afraid of death or suffering. Others don’t fear not being good enough for the world beyond this garden… Maybe they were being too dramatic, but somehow, they felt others must’ve left because that’s simply something people’s always wanted to do.

• How beautiful and cursed was their gift, it transformed every living creature, mutated the very fabric of the physical form. Nature had places to go, it needed to adapt… change to live on. Perhaps they should want that for themself too, but they didn’t. They hated the effects that the gift brought upon themself, they didn’t wish to grow old and die. And in some way, the universe had already answered their wish the moment they came into existence next to this fountain. They only had to stay there.

• Would they have left already if their gift worked the same way as others? What if someday, the fountain’s blessing ran out? Would they die immediately, borrowed time catching up to them? Their confused heart often wondered through the possibilities, billions of them. One in particular scared them more than anything else. What if one day, they wished to leave but it was already too late? Too late for what, they weren’t sure. Perhaps, they would step out of the garden and everyone they ever knew would have already left.

• Every time they saw their friend walk out the garden gates, they couldn’t help but wonder if this was it. That unknowingly it might’ve been the last time they ever saw each other. What if one of them died? Or even worse, what if… better horizons greeted their friend and they were left behind? Would that give them the courage to change? Would stepping out into the unknown be worth it then… if they had something to chase after? A dream so great that it couldn’t be contained here. But the garden was vast, and for now, it was still able to hold all their meager dreams.

• “I hope we can stay friends for a long time… I think forever might be out of reach for someone like me… but I want to promise you a really long time.” Laying on the evergreen grass, they didn’t have anything else to say. Maybe these words ended up loosing more of its meaning each time they repeated themself, but they wanted to speak their promise into existence. They wondered if their friend got tired of hearing the same things over and over again. “Don’t say those kinds of things. Destiny will prove you wrong, it likes to meddle with hopeful hearts.”

• A crossroad was near in their life, they could feel it coming around. The air felt different. Some plants in the garden changed, not under the influence of their gift but something or someone else. It was now or never to make a choice. They sat next to the fountain, waiting for the usual visit of their friend. The great unknown seemed closer than ever, a single step towards the gates might tilt their future in the wrong direction. “I don’t have a hopeful heart, I don’t even know what to plead for. I’m scared, I simply want answers. Would I live out the rest of my days happily if I stepped out now?” No one answered. It was their choice to make… that in itself felt like a curse.
