From beyond, something watches. A demon, some might say, dark and powerful. An unpleasant specter lurking in the shadows, sometimes there and sometimes not. Where he goes when he is not here, none can say. Those who have tried to follow do not return. That he exists at all in this world is a foreboding omen, proof that there is something out there with malevolent intent toward the living.

Mictlāntēcutli is an inheritor of the Incarnation through his mother, and his aspect is Keeper. He is a guardian of the spirits of the dead, watching over them until they move on to the next life. Though this might at first suggest a benevolent, or at least apathetic, overlord, he is anything but. The Shade calls for power, and as its host, he must answer. The spirits he watches are slowly drained of what vitality remains; their personality and memories. Those reborn from the spirits he has touched are withdrawn and quiet individuals with frail dispositions.

The power he drains is fed directly to the Shade living within him. He was born from two creatures of the Shade, and he needs nothing else to sustain his existence. Eating is for mortal beings who require energy to function. Neither does he sleep. It would be a waste of time for a being who cannot dream. Especially when he could be spending that time feeding the Shade.

Whether he is an intelligent being capable of independent thought is up for debate. He speaks sometimes, which is more than can be said for others like him, but he can also be found standing still, staring empty-eyed into the distance at something only he can see. What is certain is that he is a vain creature, proud of his appearance. His fur is kept glossy and sleek, and his claws are always sharp, though he seems to rarely have occasion to put them to use.
