Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Fagan
In a stroke of luck, I was actually at Makenna's shop the day Fagan burst in like he owned the place. He was trailed by another skydancer that felt both larger and smaller at the same time, both of them breathing like they'd run some kind of marathon.
In a rare show of surprise, Makenna dropped her tools in shock, only barely managing to save the piece she was working on from clattering to the ground before glaring at her intruder with a recognition I hadn't expected.
"Why are you here, Fagan?"
Not "how did you find me," or "it's good to see you." "Why are you here?" The amount of vitriol in only five words was jarring enough that I kept quiet.
"I've been looking for you for a few decades now, Your Majesty."
"I'm not royalty, Fagan. Technically I never was."
"You're still-"
"Did you need something or are you just here to talk about things we can't change?"
After that stark reminder, the purple Skydancer gestured to his companion, muttering something about needing a place to stay for the both of them. Makenna gestured to me angrily before storming out of her workspace, unfinished piece left alone on the workbench.
Through some digging of my own, Fagan told me the basics: he and his friend Thaumas had been on the run for the better part of twenty years, and though they were no longer actively being followed, having a safe place to stay was preferable to non-stop travelling. Before that, Fagan had been the only member of the Cobalt Court actively searching for Makenna after the Prince's disappearance. As her personal guard, he felt it was his duty to keep protecting her for as long as he was able, whether the court still existed or not.
And so, ever since, he and Thaumas have taken up residence near Makenna, and even though he's technically part of Chiaroscuro's guard force, everyone knows where his loyalties lie. He's also endeared himself slightly more to his charge over the years by agreeing to enchant her armors for free, though she's made it very clear he'd better keep his own cobalt gear in shape himself, since she won't break her own self-imposed rules even for him.
He's not too keen on spending time with many of the other Chiaroscurians, but he's warmed up to a few other dragons on the guard force, and Victor's not afraid to trade spirited barbs with him from across the street, so he's found a place here nonetheless. It's easy to see how much he misses his old life, but I get an acknowledging nod or a few spare words from him every now and then, so hopefully he'll come to think of his new place as home the way Makenna and Thaumas do.
