no longer disturbing my sleep
it was like a long unwelcome guest
even if sometimes i miss the sound of the rain

she remembers when it began.

as the last caretaker of 'the thing in the birdcage.'

it was a mostly ceremonial role, as the thing had lain dormant for millennia. a faint heartbeat that resonated from within the birdcage, a dim pulsating light; the angels entrusted to this role more often than not had despised it.

however, one day, it woke up.

from within the birdcage, something moved. wings unfurled and stretched out between the bars imprisoning it, and a faint whisper seemed to come from inside. the wings fluttered as if seeking for a breeze with which to take flight, before stilling.

like a child learning to speak, it sounded out words.
