oPcpltW.png Jhaiya is a very angry boy. Justified or not, he believes that his birth lair only valued him for his looks and for how much they could get for him in the Exchange, and the result is an uncomfortable combination of sullen resentment and prideful arrogance. When he arrived in the Starfall Isles as a hatchling, he ran away and soon encountered Melani, who brought him back to the drift with her out of some (possibly misguided) maternal instinct. His immediate response was to pick fights with everybody who tried to engage with him. Eventually he pushed Shayadd too far and she went for him with her claws, slashing his shoulder deeply; the shock of pain and of Melani finally losing her temper and shouting at him finally brought him up short and made him realize how terribly he’d been behaving...and how much he didn’t want to have to leave this tenuous home he’d found.

Saune and Rune took him under their wings and patiently helped him learn how to manage his anger and begin to lower his defenses. He still can be—and often is—difficult to live with, but he’s doing better. He and the hot-tempered Rasai still fight a lot, often sparring with sharp words and sometimes even scuffling physically. Saune more than once has resorted to lying on top of Jhaiya and going to sleep in order to contain his belligerence. (Saune has joked that it’s lucky Jhaiya doesn't have sharded flanks.)
