Biography

◆ Zira ◆
◆ Leader ◆ Great Tree ◆
4ylyN3i.png
Zira is the leader of the clan and oversees general roles of all clan members, but she likes to keep an attentive eye on the coliseum teams especially. As the clan takes on more and more members, she has to shoulder more burdens to keep everything running smoothly, so her partner Benny does his best to keep her laughing to alleviate her stress (often making a fool of himself doing so). She may seem intimidating to hatchlings and new members due to her imposing figure and authority, but truly she is one of the most caring dragons in the clan and adores her newfound family. Zira keeps a focused mind on her tasks, the most important of which is the protection of the lair- she handpicked an elite team of guards to patrol the edges of their territory and to protect the lair. They mostly try to deescalate situations with any hostile dragons or unfamiliar beastsclans that pass through, but when they have to resort to fighting, they are ferocious and determined to keep the Clan safe.

When Zira's not busy writing up reports or delegating duties though, she loves to nap wherever she can find a free rock - her favourite spot is a large craggy boulder just outside the Lair where she can bask in the rays of the midday sun. She's very fond of her partner Benny in an exasperated sort of way, since he loves wreaking havoc and whizzing around the lair talking to everyone at a million miles an hour, but he keeps everyone entertained so she doesn't mind too much. Plus it's his way of making sure everyone in the clan feels taken care of and happy, which takes some of the burden of keepng up with each individual dragons wellbeing off her plate. She also has two familiars she dotes on, Tala the Parda and Cadoc the Hainu, who help Zira patrol the clan borders and if they spot a threat before anyone else, they chirp and bark up a storm to warn everyone in the lair.

Zira grew up in the Gladeveins in a fairly small clan, consisting of just a few families on the edge of the main river. She didn't have any other hatchlings her age besides her clutchmates, and most of her time with them was spent splashing around in the water, pretending to be great fighters or adventurers embarking on The Search to earn independence. Unlike her siblings though, Zira never quite grew out of the excitement of adventure, and as soon as she was old enough, she set out on a journey to find her charge.

Surprisingly, Zira was found by her charge rather than the other way round- she had stopped for a short rest, as she had been doing each day since she left her clan, and woke up to a curious Fae dragon sat on her snout. She was baffled as the tiny dragon fearlessly flitted around her and clambered all over her back with an endless stream of words flowing out of him in a squeaky indignant voice.

“Excuse me miss, you’re lying on my garden! My bamboos had just sprouted yesterday and now you’ve gone and crushed them >:( Get up! Up up up up!” (accompanied with him batting at her head with tiny paws, which looked just absolutely ridiculous).

Having never met another breed besides guardians, Zira had no clue what to expect when she set out, but it certainly wasn't this. She'd heard stories of course, of fae dragons being miniscule compared to guardians, but she'd always assumed they were exaggarated the way hatchlings' tales always tend to be.

Still, who knew how much of the stories were true; considering how recklessly the dragon was hopping around on her back, effortlessly weaving between her sharp spines, he might well have been venomous or blessed with powerful magic.

Upon seeing how riled up the poor fae was getting with his crest twitching all agitated, Zira thought it'd be best to oblige even if he wasn't a threat after all; she rose to her feet and looked under her belly where there was indeed a small patch of bamboo sprouts, about half of which sprung back up undamaged when she moved (the rest had snapped unfortunately). This seemed to calm the fae down somewhat as he shimmied underneath her to assess the damage himself - Seemingly satisfied for the moment, he zipped back up to his tree and perched on a low branch to look her in the eye, his head crest lying flat against his neck.

“Uhm. My apologies for laying on your garden and forgive me if this is a rude question, but why are you growing plants? From what I know, your kind can only eat insects” she asked curiously, stepping closer to subtly peer inside the roost to look for the rest of his clan. “Well, yes…” he muttered in a flat voice, his crest flicking back “But, the tastiest ones live inside the bamboo stalks, and this way I don’t have to fly half an hour to get to the nearest bamboo forest” he trailed off scratching at the branch – from his odd body language she could put together that he was sort of, well, pouting for lack of a better term. It was strange to see such a flexible and active little dragon, after years spent with other guardians whose crests and body langauage were far less mobile.

Peering around she couldn't spot many signs of habitation in the area, and she winced internally, hoping she hadn't just crushed a lone dragons only food supply. “Is there some way I could make it up to you? Hunt for your clan to replenish your lost stocks perhaps?. I feel awful for squashing your garden” – “Oh, and I almost my manners! Hail and well met stranger, I am Zira of the Gladeveins” she added as an afterthought with a bow. The fae cocked his head at her and replied “M’name is Benny and I hail from-“ he paused to swoop off the branch and circle round the tree, landing back where he started, “-here! I don’t really have a clan, but I bet Gordon would love some extra meat! C’mon I’ll show you around”. Benny hopped off the branch and scuttled across the undergrowth, his crest flaring excitedly, and beckoned to Zira to follow him. She felt a strange instinct to protect the little dragon from all the danger the world could throw at him, and while walking behind his bounding form she came to the realisation that he was to be her Charge.

At first Zira thought she’d have her work cut out for her, protecting such a small naïve dragon, but she was surprised by his competence at every turn. She soon learned that while he was lacking in the social interaction department, only having learned to speak from wandering Beasts and dragons, Benny was an amazing hunter and fighter who could take down prey three times his size. It was also a bit of a struggle to understand each other sometimes, since Zira had been raised in a clan and Benny had survived basically entirely on instinct, but they shared knowledge and habits and over time grew closer.

When they first hatched a nest together, they officially started a Clan, which meant rehauling the entire lair; they found a sturdy oak that became the centre of their territory, with a river that ran past it into a lake. They built their first homes within the branches of the tree, a roost made of sturdy beams and small amber and sap nests for Benny to snooze inside. As more dragons came to join the clan, the lair expanded out towards cave systems and rolling hills alike, until they had a bustling community with a happy home for everyone. They never forgot the roots of their Clan though, and to this day each dragon within the lair has a piece of amber or sap from Bennys original lair displayed in their homes.
