Biography
◆ Benny ◆
◆ Hunter ◆ Great Tree ◆
He openly admires his partner Zira, and only really stops zipping around when she curls around him to take a nap; then he stretches out and snoozes under her tail (giving everyone a break from his antics). When needed, he can drop the goofiness in a pinch though - in fact he’s one of the best dragons to come to with issues, since after letting others grumble through their problem (and helping them come up with a solution if needed), he will try his hardest to cheer them up! Benny is also a fierce fighter in the coliseum team! He's a formidable opponent, despite his small stature, and often trains with his familiar Gordon to keep his skills sharp, even when its not his turn on the coliseum rota. When Gordon's not in the mood to spar though, he focuses his boundless energy on hunting instead - he provides a good chunk of the insect supply for the clan hoard, with any excess going in an underground pantry that is kept cool by Laputa’s magic. |

Benny’s parents were part of an old colony in the Shrieking Wilds and lived in a massive sap roost built into the side of a tree. The clan was always full of life, with dragons constantly flitting in and out of the amber tunnels and the hatchlings flashing their colourful ruffs at one another playfully. The colony had built a good relationship with the surrounding Dunhoof herds and fellow dragon clans over the years, trading with them on a regular basis and occasionally holding joint festivals. However as time passed, more clans seeking territory moved in and the herds only grew larger, forcing past friends to compete in a harsh race for resources and space. Tensions only rose higher and as trading ebbed off, skirmishes started breaking out between the borders - only small scuffles at first, but as soon as first blood was drawn, it became a free for all. The elders of each clan tried to negotiate for peace, but a group of wrathful fae youths banded together with the express goal of driving out the other clans. The light atmosphere in the roost was soon marred by the fights and ambushes, which were getting more and more common as the vengeful fae grew overconfident and foolishly began lashing out at the beastclans too, who had been nothing but steadfast allies in past years. In an especially foolhardy and underhanded move, they enraged a Dunhoof herd by burning their winter supplies and in fleeing, led their pursuers all the way back to the roost. Unable to reach the heights of the lair, the centaurs chose instead to hack away at the great tree, weakening the lower structure of the roost - and that was all it took to bring down the entire clan. The elders rallied all flying dragons to evacuate their hatchlings before the nest collapsed under its own weight, but once their safety was ensured, the clan flew at their enemies in a blind rage. They swarmed the herd with sharp claws, spitting magic at the centaurs who retaliated with spears and arrows; both sides suffered heavy losses and in the end came to a bloody stalemate. The fae dug through the wreckage and recovered what they could, but ultimately chose to migrate away and rebuild their roost elsewhere, for they felt it wasn’t right to raise their young at the site of such slaughter and tragedy. The centaurs that got away spread the tale of the battle to their herd and as word got out, the old territory of the clan became widely regarded as cursed land. And so with no one daring to make a home there, it grew wild and green again, ferns and moss covering shattered spears and amber. In the chaos of it all, a single unhatched egg was left behind, buried under a layer of translucent amber. The egg remained in stasis, unhatched as all dragon eggs do, and while the sun occasionally pierced through the thick foliage onto the clearing, the heat wasn’t enough to incubate the dragon inside. It was only when spring turned to summer and the amber absorbed the sweltering June heat, that Benny finally hatched, emerging to the overgrown ruins of his clan’s home. He spent his first few hours exploring the shattered roost, clambering over the amber shards and peering into the few intact tunnels that remained. His hunger eventually led him to try and chew on a couple of leafy plants that had taken over the clearing, but he recoiled in disgust at the taste each time- by some luck he stumbled upon a maggot colony under an overturned log and discovered the joys of hunting insects for the first time. Content and full, he returned to his egg and fell asleep curled up under the fading light of the sunset. Over the next few weeks, he quickly grew into an adept hunter and an exceptionally strong flier, having to catch all his food alone and survive without the help of a colony- his only companion during this time was a Tigerblood Foo, Gordon, who of course couldn’t communicate very well with the small dragon, but he recognised that he was young and could probably use a bit of extra protection (besides he could scratch those sweet spots that Gordon wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise.) It was a few months later when Benny was awoken by a deep rumbling right outside his lair (a shabby little roost that he’d pieced together from the shattered pieces of amber) and found a huge Guardian napping on his front lawn. After a few comical misunderstandings they became close friends and eventually mates, and they chose to start building a new lair for the clan they planned to create. They flew around the forest, consulting other clans on how to go about starting their own and surveying their territory to figure out how much of it was theirs. On one of their visits with a nearby clan, they were offered hatchlings to take home - the clan that offered them had no lair space left and only enough food to keep them going for a short while, unless they could pass on some of their young into a good home. After this encounter they realised the potential for adopting dragons was huge, so they flew out with the specific goal of giving a home to any dragons and hatchlings who needed one, until their Clan became known as a safe haven for all. |
