》fragility
”Heaven’s will is heartless— so forgive my immorality.”
”天道无情,容我无义。”

Winter clutches were often weak, they said, born into harshness and cold. Of his clutch, only one hatchling survived the winter. Even so, compared to the hatchlings raised in the mercy of spring, the vitality of summer and the harvest of autumn, he was weak. He had not the power of his fellow crows, nor their predisposition for violence, but he made up for that in wit and cunning.

》resilience
”My fate is my own, not even the heavens can dictate it.”
”我命由我不由天。”

Despite his lacking physical prowess, Wu Qing had an affinity for magical combat, choosing to study the path of a mage early on. As his clan focused on physical combat and their only mage at the time was a reclusive elder, Wu Qing had to fumble along the path of magic without a guide for a long time. At times, he had to endure injuries and mocking laughter when his magic would backfire on him, licking his wounds in private while continuing his studies.

》friendship
”With one bosom friend in this world, even the ends of the earth are but a step away.”
”海内存知己,天涯若比邻。”

Wu Qing didn’t have many he could call friends. His own clan regarded him with indifference, and he rarely left the clan’s borders. If you asked him, he would probably only think of one:
A wayward crow who had wandered just a few steps into their lands, running into Wu Qing— he had been out on a walk trying to clear his mind. Wu Qing attacked first, startled by an intruder. They didn’t have to fight for long for Wu Qing to know he had lost, but instead, the stranger chose to fall back first.

Wuchang snuck in often afterwards, bringing with him little trinkets he had procured while wandering around, spending days with Wu Qing chatting, with the occasional spar. As time passed, the two gradually became inseparable friends.

》accomplishment

His efforts on becoming a mage took him down a long, difficult path. Yet, his efforts did not betray him, eventually bearing fruit. Before the cold gazes of his clansmen, Wu Qing defeated one of the celebrated warriors of he clan, watching scorn morph into shock. Smiling falsely, he looked down at them. This was but the beginning.

》farewell

Wuchang stopped coming, all of a sudden. He had been acting odd, the last few times they’d met. He’d been quiet and distracted, often muttering to himself under his breath. Wu Qing didn’t know what to make of it. They’d been fine all this while, what had changed?

[“I might be leaving for a while, I think.” Wuchang smiled at him, calm as ever, yet somehow seeming sad at the same time. “I don’t know when I’ll come back.” (He wasn’t sure if he would, either.)

“But where are you going?” It was hard for him to think about going back to how things had been before, the distant stares of his clan with only the wild forest for company. “I can’t come?”

“You have family here... you shouldn’t come. It’ll only burden you. If you really miss me, come to the kingdom in the north to visit sometime.” He produced a black and white plume from a small pouch, pressing it into Wu Qing’s grasp. “For you. If you want to find me.”

Wu Qing stared at the monochromatic feather after Wuchang had left, not understanding— why had he been given a magpie’s feather?]
》burden

After Wuchang had gone, Wu Qing threw himself into training, and within the year he had positioned himself at the head of the clan as a mage despite his physical weakness. If Wuchang had matters he didn’t want to burden Wu Qing with, Wu Qing would become strong enough that nothing could burden him. When he was good enough, he would travel to the city. Maybe then he would know what the magpie feather that he kept close by meant.
》illness

Wu Qing had always been prone to illness as a hatchling, but his health had improved in adulthood. Yet maybe it was because he had been on edge for so long, not daring to let himself relax for even a moment, old problems started to resurface. The chaos of the capital only makes things worse. How long can he hold out before Wuchang finds out about his declining health? Hopefully, he will never have to know so he can focus on the throne.
》sight

Wu Qing realized with alarm— his sight was fading. In daylight he could still get by with his blurry vision, but in darkness, he was close to blind. This weakness scared him, but even more so, he worried about Wuchang. When Wuchang is out, he sneaks off to visit the healers of Yaowang Peak, but they are only able to somewhat delay the failing of his eyes. However, it is only fighting poison with poison. His already weak body cannot withstand strong medicine, but Wu Qing cannot take the time to recover when one mistake could harm Wuchang irreversibly. Hiding his frailty and half-blindness, he forged on.

Thankfully, he could carry lanterns by his side without seeming out of place.
