Biography
URIAGE
|
Perhaps it was the sailor's nature to believe in such grand stories and superstitions that ate at the young captain's bones. Difficult was it not to overhear the drunken conversations of the regulars who gathered at the counter where they were waited on by the barmaid, a pretty little coatl in a dress. Uri sipped on his rum, listening to the entitled babble of the gaggle of landlubbers, all who laughed at the expense of those who still believed in the old gods. "Tidelord is dead," one drake announced. "Dead implies he existed once, don't entertain such fantasies." "Aye, the old faerietales are simply that. Nothing but hatchling stories." Uri's grip on his tankard tightened. These men had never so much as left the shore of their comfortable seaside homes, never roamed past where the fishing boats ventured for catch. The gall they had to state such things. Perhaps it was just his sailor's nature to believe in the mystical, but he sailed for a living, and when the storms rocked the waves and the mighty ocean washed over the deck of a vessel, then it was certainly hard to deny that some great being was out there, that some god ruled over the water. With a diced sniff he slammed back the rest of his drink, leaving coins at his table for the coatl woman, and he made his exit of the splintered wooden door that lead out into the wet town streets. The rains had just come and everything dripped with wash, little rivers of moisture ran through the cobblestone. And Uri followed them down to the docks where his charge sat rocking on the waves, her crew likely asleep in their bunks and hammocks. He boarded his ship, ran his fingers across her sides as he retired to his cabin, wherein he sat by candlelight, pondering the words of the drunkards. 'The Tidelord,' he thought. 'Is real. He isn't dead. He lives. I know it. I feel it.' He clutched the Lapis pendulum about his neck, held it firm. He had found his next voyage. And when dawn broke Captain Uri would set course and he would prove to everyone that the Tidelord still lived. |
