Biography

SASHA

monument_light.png

The old heavy tome hit the table with a thud that kicked the dust up in rolling clouds. It was a wonder how the small woman had even lifted it, its history a thick collection of handwritten documents. Sasha stared at it, then looked up to the man - an imperial - who had requested the tome. The old tome had been read by few, and those who did read it left not quite the same dragon they came. The law of the land ruled against censoring and banning literature, especially of historical events, because knowledge itself was so important.

Sasha - librarian as she were - stood by this belief with such rooting that her opinion could hardly be swayed. But this book, this book made her question that belief. This old collection was found in Hewn City, uncovered by an excavation group and brought to the Archives long before Sasha was even a sparkle in her parents' eyes. Whatever secrets it held were ancient and dark. She had gazed upon the text only once, unable to read its strange alphabet.

Only those who had practiced the ancient tongue of the first dragons could decipher its text.

She looked up to the man who stood before her, draped in priestly garb.

"Are you quite sure you want to read it, the knowledge within seems to hold a great power."

"I believe I will find my answers within it," the old priest replied.

Sasha nodded in understanding and left the imperial with the book. She organized the shelves, sorting by date of historical events, and moving new tomes and scrolls into their spots on the shelves. She had all but forgotten the priest till she heard the door to the back room click open and clack closed.

She turned her attention to him as he sauntered down the isle of books, past the shelves, his walk a stumbling totter. His eyes looked sunken in and the light of his scales seemed dulled, not the bright glow they were when he had arrived.

"Sir," she inquired, but he said nothing and passed her by, walking out to leave her alone in the Archives once more.

The back room door stood ominous, its intricate carving of gold and ebony gleaming like a warning. Sasha slipped one last tome into place and slowly she approached the door, pushing it open gently to peer inside.

The old tome lay on the table, still open to a center page. She approached it slowly.

The text was indecipherable, as strange to her now as when she had first seen it, but on the page was a picture in charcoal, slightly smudged with time but still distinguishable. A large dark beast was on the page, a thousand eyes staring, a million mouths gaping. Sasha might have dismissed the black color as the charcoal, but something inside her told her that black was indeed the color of this terror. Darker than even the silhouette of the Shadowbinder.

Filled suddenly with fear she slammed the book shut, unable to bare looking at the abomination anymore. She was filled with a chill in her body, as though she weren't alone and she chanced a look over her shoulder.

Nothing.

What in the Lightweaver's Ruins was this book?

Sasha wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer.
