Growing up, Vermilion's number one role model was her clan's chef, a grouchy perfectionist of a dragon, but one who knew what he was talking about. Many hours were spent in his kitchen, usually regulated to menial tasks such as potato peeling. It never bothered her much, as long as she got to taste what they made after. She always felt the process of taking the basic components of a recipe and transforming them into something delicious was a form of magic of its own. After a few years, the chef decided that she should properly apprentice with him. She took to it with enthusiasm, trying her hardest to replicate his graceful movements, but her creations were never quite seemed to match up to his. The bright and loving kitchen she drew so much comfort from made her feel clumsy and ill suited to such precise work. She found that she preferred to sing his praises, in exchange for her own portion of whatever he was cooking. Still, she has him to thank for first igniting the flames of her passion. Nowadays, Vermilion spends most days traveling. She escorts traders in order to keep them on the safest route and protect from the dangers of the road. While she can hold her own in a fight, she is a gentle soul at heart. Even as she spends most of her days on the road, she still finds time to stop and appreciate the little things. A brisk breeze, or the beauty of wildflowers growing along the path. She enjoys her alone time and tends not to stick with the same traveling partners, but makes friends with a casual ease. She took her current job as a means of seeing the world, and to follow up on research for her travel column. Her words regale readers with all the best spots and hidden gems in Sorneith. It is well received--especially in the Spire and surrounding territories--but has a long way to grow before she's made a name for herself. Still, Vermilion hopes to one day gain enough of a reputation to travel as a food critic full time. Her fashion sense tends to make her stand out in a crowd, preferring to dress in as many bright colors as possible while still keeping her outfits practical. She has a number of novelty tie dyed handkerchiefs that she likes to wear. Her parents are both mages, and taught her a great deal of combat magic growing up. They have a good relationship, but they think very little of her interests, which puts a strain on her. She makes annual trips to visit them and makes an effort to keep in touch, but otherwise tends to avoid them. It's not often she is there to fill her bed at home, but it is a warm and inviting--if cluttered--space. Every bit of available wall is either occupied by shelving, or by a wallpapering of travel maps. Souvenirs picked up on the road are proudly displayed on practically every flat surface. Well worn stacks of culinary magazines have built a papery fortress around an overstuffed navy chair tucked into a corner. There is also a tiny, spotless kitchen. Dating Belrune. Relationship: Familial The senator was one of the dragons who raised her. They have a strong bond, and Vermilion often comes to her about her problems, more so than her birth parents. Relationship: Friend When she first moved into the Spire, Vermilion was instantly drawn to Betsu's kitchen. The warmth of it reminded her of her childhood and put her at ease. Her very first published review was of the bogsneak's baking prowess. It inadvertently caused a bit of a fuss, as she doesn't officially "sell" her pastries to the public, and suddenly there was a line outside her kitchen of dragons who wanted a taste themselves. It did no harm in the long run, though Vermilion still feels quite bad for the trouble she caused her. congrats!youvediscoveredmyplaceholdertext |
Relationship: Coworker, friend Dotty is the one who convinced her to start writing for the local paper. He proofreads her work before it's published and offers advice. Relationship: Uncomfortable around Kingcup's restaurant was one of the most challenging reviews she has ever done. She prides herself on making fair judgement of an establishment, in part by trying a little bit of everything on their menu. Unfortunately, the smell alone was enough to make her gag. She spent nearly a week attempting to acclimate herself, returning again and again. In the end, she had to get a plagueborn friend to taste-test in her stead.
