Malachi was one of Ari and Robin's first children, and was trained to take the leadership role after them. This fell through with Slate's arrival, so Malachi ran away to the Behemoth out of jealousy. He stayed lost for awhile, and his flock was gone when he tried to return to the Evergreens. Grieved, Malachi returned to the Behemoth and lives in service to the Gladekeeper with his wife Gilead and the other devotees. Malachi took a vow of silence, and could not speak to Ari when he found him. Malachi is not angry anymore, but still regrets his young selfishness though he is happy where he is now.
