Disgrace.

That is how most of my kind sees me. A Guardian dragon with no charge, no purpose, no honor. Of course, my mate, Surak does not see me that way. He likes everybody, even the ornery Plague dragon he protects. I love everything about my dear Surak, his big goofy grin, his big goofy eyes, his big goofy personality… He doesn’t think of me as anything more or less than a dragon whom he loves very, very much.

But even he must never know my secret.

You see, I do have a charge, and I have known it since my first hours out of the egg. No sooner did I know what I had been called to protect than did I also know that I must keep it veiled in secrecy. It was something seemingly so unimportant, so unassuming, that surely no one should think it worth protecting at all. But I knew that my charge had power beyond imagining.

My name is Truth, and I guard the tears that my clanmates have shed.

It seems a tragic irony that a dragon born of Light should conduct her work in the dark... but that is how it must be. So much is expected of me in the daytime; herbs to prepare for Kotocachi, hatchlings to mind, trips to the Lanternlea Port to undertake. I also have the responsibility of Sodiq, my familiar, which requires a journey to the border of the Tidelord's domain. When night comes, however, my real duty may begin.

Nighttime is the ally of secretkeepers. At night, prying eyes are closed in sleep, and remarkable things can be hidden in the shadows. After the sun has disappeared over the horizon, I shut myself in my grotto and begin my tasks.

In the very back of my quarters, there is a cupboard made from an ancient oak, gifted to the Dayfire clan by an ally in the Nature flight. I open this cupboard up, admiring the intricate woodwork and checking one last time to ensure I am completely alone. This cupboard, like myself, has a secret. Carefully, I press my talons on the back of the cupboard, which is indeed a false back. The panel slides aside gently to reveal rows on rows of glass bottles.

These are the tears I guard, more precious than liquid diamonds.

I inspect each bottle closely, ensuring none is damaged. These are special trinkets, crafted for me by the artisans of the Port. Beautiful though they are, there is nothing singularly astonishing about these bottles. That is where my magic comes in.

When a new dragon joins the clan, I take a bottle in my talons and concentrate very firmly on that dragon. Then, the light from my lamp quivers, and a tiny tendril of light writes the name of that dragon on the bottle. Now, every tear that springs from the wells of that dragon's eyes is captured in the bottle that bears their name. If the tear falls to the earth, if it is dried by the wind, or washed away in the rain, it does not matter. That tear will always find its way into my bottles, where it will be safe until it is needed.

I believe dragons would be surprised by these tears and bottles, if they could know about them. Some observations make complete sense; dear tenderhearted Surak has filled many bottles in his time. But dragons might be astonished to see that the bottles belonging to Zanjeer or Vihaan are more full than empty. Even the fiercest, most emotionless of dragons know sorrow. Is there a way to heal the wounds of their soul, as herbs heal the wounds of the flesh?

There is. That is the secret I guard, until the time comes when the power of tears is needed most.
