she broke through the shell of her egg, a small inky black body wriggling free of the confines. the membrane of her newly vacated home leaked tarry black ooze, coating her scales and the surrounding earth in it. mother took her aside, beginning to clean the slimy residue away, exposing her scales to the fresh, gentle air of her new home. once content with the cleanliness of her hatchling, mother moved onto the next sibling in the clutch - ??? snuggled tightly against her belly, awaiting their arrival.

none of her other clutch mates shared the unique experience of her birth, and this made her mother worry. she could not understand them as they spoke, but she could hear the voice of mother, and another voice - father! she wiggled happily, stepping over her siblings to head toward the source of the newest voice. she felt a large but gentle paw pull her back again, setting her alongside her siblings who wriggled and chirped beside her. her parents loved her, but they were certain that something was wrong. they had never seen or heard of such a thing.

it started a few weeks into her new life. too young to open her eyes, she would wake up, thrashing and crying, black tears trailing down her cheeks through closed lids. the tears fell to the ground, staining the dirt a sickly color, as tendrils spread to the surrounding area. this worried her parents more - was this... contagious? could this strange illness hurt the rest of her siblings? what if they were to come into contact with the tears? ??? was separated from her siblings, allocated to sleeping between the mothers front paws, where she could keep a close eye on her, and keep her from wandering too far. the first couple of nights, she cried out for her siblings. mother would groom her until she fell asleep. but... it was lonely.

although she had been the first born of the clutch, her eyes opened weeks after those of her brothers and sisters. she was able to hear, smell, and talk just fine - but her eyes simply refused to open. she sat patiently, listening as each sibling opened their eyes, taking in their surroundings for the first time. how her parents congratulated them for such a huge accomplishment. she wanted to wake up in the morning, and see the sunlight streaming in, instead of just feeling its warmth on her scales. she wanted to play outside with her siblings, to chase them around and roll through the grass and watch the world unfold around her. she was ready.

when her eyes finally opened, she was met with... darkness? she blinked. then she blinked again. but try as she might, nothing would come into focus. her parents were aghast. she heard confused mutterings from her siblings, trying to keep their voices down as they spoke; "what's wrong with ???, mama?" "papa, her eyes look weird!". she swung her head around in confusion, panic beginning to wrap it's fingers around her heart. she knew the lids had parted, but she couldn't see anything. why couldn't she see anything? she let out a heart wrenching cry. her parents hadn't congratulated her as they had her siblings, even though her eyes were open. her siblings hadn't bounded up to her to initiate play. instead, they were insulting her. her heart welled up. and just like that, with no sieve to hold them back, the black tears poured in rivers down her cheeks; "what did i do wrong?"

her parents did the best they could for her, but she was kept separate from her siblings. as they went out to play and be hatchlings, she was stuck in the confines of the cave, a prisoner for her own 'safety'. father sought help for her affliction, as mother doted on her. she wasn't ungrateful, but she didn't want to stay inside, and be fed, and be treated like a baby. she was the oldest sibling. it just wasn't fair! late one night, tucked between mother's front paws, as she had been since her strange symptoms began to show, she heard her parents speak in hushed voices. they must have thought she had fallen asleep, as they spoke in a way that implied she was not meant to hear the conversation.

father spoke of an old dragoness he had met - one revered for her knowledge of medicine and magic - and how she had spoken of ???'s illness as something else entirely... a curse. he spoke of what the dragon had said this could mean for the family, and for her siblings. the danger of the sickly ooze that poured from her body. a close eye would need to be kept on her, and she could, under no circumstances, become upset. this was the first time ??? held back her feelings. though her thoughts raced, and her heart thumped like a drum in her chest, she feigned sleep and eventually drifted into a restless slumber.

she was too young to be on her own. but she knew she couldn't stay. she would put her family in danger. the next night, she decided, would be the last she would spend with them. as all prepared to settle down for the night, she hid, following the faintest whisper of wind whistling between the spaces in the rocks. they wouldn't find her here. this would be her only opportunity to run. starting that very night, they would never let her out of their sights. the prison she had come to know would remain one forever. she could feel the shift in the room as her parents slowly began to become disconcerted that their eldest child had not yet come to bed.

they hadn't wanted to wake her siblings, who had already begun to drift off, and send them into a panicked frenzy. so they stepped softly, keeping their voices low. distracted in their search for their child, she began to make her way toward the sound of the wind outside. as she crawled along the shadows of the wall, she heard their desperate murmurs, which guided her away from them. "where is she?" "i can't find her!" "have you found her yet?" "nothing here" "???, where are you? please come out!" as she neared the exit, her mothers voice seemed so far away, but she could hear the sound of a sob building in her chest, "we can't give up... if she goes out there, she will die..."

perhaps it was better that way.
a cursed daughter was far worse than no daughter at all.
