Biography

ENNIS

zAYwCmS.png Black fog rolls thick over the ground, the outstretch of invisible claws scratch at his ankles, he yanks away from one only to be snagged by another. His heart is in his mouth, he knows this place, but never had he wandered so deep into the black. As he stumbles from the hands, hidden by the dark clouds on the ground, he finds himself deeper in this void then ever he had dared to wander. Then he sees the great beast, shapeless and haunting, a legion of white eyes all fixed on him. He turns to run, his nose collides with a door that was not previously there.

He can feel the beast rushing up to meet him, but he dares not enter the door. The beast scares him, hunts him like an animal, but this door is unexplored, and he can't force himself to open it.

He knows the exact moment when the beast becomes one with the fog, he's seen it enough, can count the seconds between its appearance and its attack. The fog rises up, a dark cloud of a tentacle, and it wraps around his neck. He can not feel it squeeze, it's cold where it touches but there is no pressure. Still he can not breath.

His hands reach up, he claws at his own neck, nails fazing through the chaotic apparition, because it isn't there, it doesn't exist. But it's real enough to choke him.

A blast of thunder roars to beat the band, lightning illuminates the sky through the window of the old bell tower. Ennis bolts from his bed, heaving in great gulps of air. His own hands are around his neck and he forces them down. He huffs, looks out the window. Another strike of lightning brightens the room so that he can make out the droplets of rain rushing down his glass.

He huffs, turns his attentions to the fireplace. The bell tower had been renovated into a living space long before he had arrived, it had been the perfect place for him to rest, there above the chapel. The fire is dwindling and Ennis rises to stroke it before putting another log on. The rains make the old room awfully cold.

The room now glowing with firelight Ennis moves to check under his bed, as childish as it may sound, and then in the small storage room. Nothing. But he knows it is here. It is always here, always with him.

He had once thought it a gift he had. The ability to draw the darkness out of those who the Shade took hold of. The power to remove the touch of chaos. Now he knows better. Knows the consequence of his gift. He is aware of how his bright green feathers turn dark, droop, how his hair becomes murkier with every miracle he performs. A pale body never haralds good news for a coatl, and so pale was he that his veins could be seen through his sickly skin.

He can feel the bleakness approaching before the knock on the door even sounds. Still he waits, hears the echo of the knock, the voice of the priest calling to him. He opens the door.

"Ennis," the priest greets with no amount of pleasantry. "Another one came in, a hatchling brought by her parents. They asked for your help."

Ennis nods, tells the priest to bring them in. The young hatchling is laid on the bed, thick black schlop drips from her mouth, eyes that should shine gold like the sun, instead glow the same lifeless white he sees in his dreams. He breathes deeply, places a hand over her forhead, and watches as the Shade is extracted from her body, and seeps into his own.
