GIANT SPOILERS FOR SUPER PAPER MARIO LOL
so. This game has an insANE amount of story for being a Paper Mario game
it managed to make me cry, I mean cmon
so essentially there's this guy named Blumiere ok, his dad is like. The king of his dimension, and disapproves of humans, but Blumiere, being a childish prince, falls in love with this lady named Timpani she's named after a drum yes I know
but Blu's dad catches wind of this and gets really angry at Blu banishing Timpani to wander dimensions infinitely until she keels over and dies, and she almost does, but she wanders into this dimension called the Flipside where a squid-like thing named Merlon saves her and turns her into a B U T T E R F L Y
Mmmmario encounters Timpani (Now known as Tippi) and that starts the story whOohHhEhea
but w a i t
Blumiere is FURIOUS at his dad for this, so he takes this big ol book that's supposed to tell of ways to annihilate the future which his tribe was protecting they actually stole it but they 'stole it to protect it', Blu claims byea. He destroys his home dimension and EVERYONE in it, going actually insane and pretty much deciding to destroy everyone and everything
He's the entire franchise's only tragic villain (villain NOT piloted by means of power or wanting to rule, he's piloted by anger and sadness, and looooovevee)
but, eh
Mario, in the dimension with Merlon and Tippi, is told by Merlon that he's the hero fortold in the book to prevent the destruction of dimensions (go figures) and he has to go about gathering pure hearts to counteract this thing called a chaos heart which is the key to destroying everything (it was created by a forced wedding between Bowser and Peach so technically they're canonically married)
buuuuttt
Luigi gets SNATCHED at some point during the intro to the game and is hypnotized by this snarky little brat named Nastasia (who is in love with Blumiere Blu's also known as Bleck now bc he's insane lol) which in turn creates Mr. L, the world's biggest failure at a super villain I still love him though he's so amazing
but the reason Luigi gets snatched in the first place is because the book claims him to be the perfect host for the chaos heart, the perfect person to destroy the universe people speculate that this is because he has so much negativity and anger from living in Mario's shadow
he combines with this super villain Dimentio guy to create this awful monstrosity that you have to fight after fighitng Bleck and kickin his butt, which in turn snaps him out of his insanity, since he a, got his butt kicked, but b, saw Tippi and remembered her, which yknow. Stops his insanity cuz it was caused by her supposed death
but after beating the Mr. L/Dimentio monster you're able to destroy the chaos heart, Blu n Tip fall back in love and teleport away someplace, Luigi is still canonically possessable (He was controlled by this stupid plant placed into his conscious which is unremovable and able to be triggered and cause him to go into servant-mode with the snap of the controller's fingers and humming/whistling/singing a certain tune)
here's some random stuff I left out; at one point you visit a dimension that is literally hell full of dead Marios (which is where the River Twygz comes from)
Dimentio turns a guy into a plant and has him scream vegetable names at Mario while he attacks him
"This strange little man is none other then Mario, the hero told in the Prognosticus (the name of the book, I know it's a mouthful)"
".....MARIA, EY?!?!"

I wrote this down for the 'very terribly describe your fandom' thread and I loved it so much I had to put it here

blue man who says the word 'bleck' too much wants to destroy the universe
why? some book said so
overlooked younger brother finally gets the spotlight again
albeit as an edgy and annoying super villain, but still
why does this happen? cuz book said so

he else becomes a weird polygonal monster later but we don't talk about that
you go about collecting hearts to fight your brother who is apparently the best person to control the power of the chaos heart
most people assume that this is because he's so overlooked, poor fellow, his jealousy and anger makes him the best candidate to destroy dimensions

small child who everyone says is cute in the first half of the game becomes a rupee-demanding spider demon later. It is horrifying. crack.
